The losses -- and the frustrations -- continue to mount for the Boston Red Sox.

They lost 3-0 to the Chicago Cubs in Friday's series opener at Wrigley Field, and afterward came the news that right-hander Josh Beckett will miss his next because of shoulder inflammation.

At 31-33, the Red Sox are not a happy team.

"We hit some balls good, man," said second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who grounded sharply to third to end the defeat. "We just hit it right to them. It's frustrating. We're not trying to be (expletive). Everyone's trying, man. We're just not playing good. We scored no runs. You can't win a game if you score zero runs. That's it. Come out tomorrow and play."

If only it were that simple. The Red Sox have now spent more than a third of the season almost exclusively in last place. Following a 1-5 start, they have endured streaks of 0-5, 1-8 and 1-7, which is not a recipe for contention.

Third baseman Kevin Youkilis was the definite victim of some bad luck, hitting the ball hard while still finishing 0-for-4. He was asked if the team is getting frustrated.

"Next question," he said. "I'm just tired of these questions."

The problem for the Red Sox is that at the moment, there are no easy answers.
