Joe Mauer picked up 4 hits but the Twins got absolutely beat up by the Brewers in a 16 - 4 pounding today at Miller Park.  Minnesota went through 6 pitchers (including backup catcher Drew Butera) as Jason Marquis was only able to go 1.2 innings in his 7th start of the season, bringing his record to 2-4 with a depressing 8.47 ERA. Conversely, Zack Greinke had the game in total control, going 6.2 innnings giving up 1 ER and picking up 6 K's along the way.  And Jonathan Lucroy tied a Brewers franchise record by driving in 7 runs on a day when the 10 run mercy rule would've been nice. The Twins were able to draw first blood after a Willingham singled to left, scoring Ben Revere but the Brewers countered with 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st and never looked back picking up 6 in the 2nd, 2 in the 4th, 1 in the 5th and 5 more in the 7th. Once again, Minnesota's starting pitching let the team down. Marquis has 2 quality starts this year with a win against KC (6.0, 3ER) a...

Twins designate Marquis for assignment

The Jason Marquis experiment in Minnesota lasted just seven starts. The Twins announced Tuesday that they have designated the veteran Marquis for release or assignment and will call up right-hander Cole DeVries from Triple-A Rochester to take Marquis' spot on the roster. Marquis, a 33-year-old with 106 career wins in 13 seasons, signed a one-year, 3 million contract in the...

Rocky rotation is sinking Twins

Through most of Ron Gardenhire's tenure as manager, the Minnesota Twins have won with a consistent set of starting pitchers who have been remarkably good at avoiding injuries. The Twins have used 10 or more starting pitchers in a season just twice since 2002, and in both of those seasons -- 2006 and 2009 -- they gave a handful of starts to September call-ups. This season, though...

Twins to designate pitcher Marquis

The Twins have decided to designate the contract of Jason Marquis for assignment, a major-league source told FOXSports.com. The move is expected to become official in the next 24 to 48 hours. Marquis went 2-4 with an 8.47 ERA in seven starts for the Twins this year. His last start was his worst, as he lasted only 1 2/3 innings while surrendering eight earned runs in a Sunday loss...

Butera latest Twins position player to pitch

Last year it was outfielder Michael Cuddyer. This year, catcher Drew Butera became the next position player to pitch in relief for the Minnesota Twins. Butera was called upon to pitch in the eighth inning of Sunday's blowout loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. After starter Jason Marquis lasted just 1 23 innings, Minnesota's bullpen had a full day of work in store. Enter Butera...

Twins Getting a Spark & Other AL Notes

The Twins have been desperate for wins all season and now have won four in a row. A huge reason for their success has been the emergence of Brian Dozier at shortstop and the pitching of Scott Diamond and P.J. Walters. All of whom were recently called up from Triple-A Rochester. Diamond has been a trendy name over the last couple of days because of the numbers, but I like Dozier...

Steinbach still can't get enough of baseball

For Terry Steinbach, playing baseball didn't end when he retired from the major leagues in 1999. The former Minnesota Twins catcher and New Ulm native continued to play the game he loved for more than a decade. It began with town ball for several years, and eventually Steinbach joined a league in Minnesota designed for players 35 years and older. Now 50, however, Steinbach has...

I think this Joe Mauer contract might have been a bad idea

-  Quick, what's the flukiest home run season in history?  You thought of Brady Anderson's 50 in 1996, right?  Of course, I'm pretty sure everybody did.  He's as out of place on a list of players with 50 homers in a season as most of this blog's readers would be in a book store, and I'm pretty sure he's the first name most people would come up with...

Marquis: 'I'm putting this team in a hole'

By JESSE TEMPLE FOXSportsWisconsin.com MILWAUKEE Clubbies can launder the Twins uniforms all they want, but the pungent stench of misery clinging to Jason Marquis these days is simply inescapable. No matter where Marquis takes the mound, in the home whites or the road grays, the Minnesota pitcher has been nothing short of disastrous recently. His immense struggles continued Sunday...

Designated for assignment: Jason Marquis, John Gaub and Cody Ransom

– The Minnesota Twins designated right handed pitcher Jason Marquis for assignment according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports. – The Tampa Bay Rays designated left handed pitcher John Gaub for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man roster reports Joe Smith of the St. Petersburg Times. – The Arizona Diamondbacks designated infielder Cody Ransom for assignment and recalled infielder...

Twins hope to keep bats hot at Milwaukee

By ALAN FERGUSON, STATS WriterDue largely to some hot hitting, the Minnesota Twins are riding a three-game win streak for the first time in nearly 11 months. They'll try to add to that run Saturday, but to do so they'll need to overcome their woes against Milwaukee Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo at Miller Park. Minnesota (13-26) posted double-digits hits for the third straight...

Twins' Pavano answers critics versus Brewers

By Jesse Temple FOXSportsWisconsin.comMILWAUKEE Take away a king's power and wealth, and what is he? A commoner by societal standards. Take away a major league starting pitcher's zip and velocity, and what is he? Pedestrian by baseball standards. Carl Pavano's reign as the Minnesota Twins ace didn't feel much like an exalted title he'd be able to maintain...

Tigers Take the Series from the Buccos

After coming off a sweep to the Minnesota Twins, the Tigers looked to rebound when the Pittsburgh Pirates came to Comerica. Both clubs had losing records coming into the series  and both trying to make up games in the standings. This made for a great three days of baseball, that saw near history, new career highs, and [...]

Betting Big on the Brewers

Record 14-21 Bank Account -1010 Twins at Brewers - This is the game of the day if not the weekend. Jason Marquis with his 6.68 ERA takes the hill for the Twins vs Zack Greinke and his 2.88 ERA. Greinke has not lost in 21 starts at home since joining the Brewers. Greinke has a streak of 15 straight scoreless innings. If those stats are not enough what if I told you Ryan Braun,...
