The Rays selected Clemson third baseman Richie Shaffer with the 25th pick in the draft Monday. Tampa Bay hopes he'll turns out to be as good as the only other third baseman the organization has chosen in the first round, Evan Longoria. As a junior this spring, Shaffer, a 6-foot-3, 205-pound left-handed hitter, posted a .336 batting average with 10 home runs and 46 RBI. He walked 63 times and had a .573 percentage and a .480 on-base percentage. Rays vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said Shaffer, 21, was the best available player at that spot. His power, defense and makeup made him an attractive pick. If that sounds familiar, it's because Friedman said the same thing about Longoria when the Rays used the third overall pick in 2006 on the three-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove-winner. Rays scouting director R.J. Harrison said Shaffer's power will be evident once he starts playing. "(It's) power now, not power that we're proje...

James Shields is not as good as last season

After watching James Shields pitch for the Tampa Bay Rays last night against the Yankees, something seemed wrong with the pitcher. At no point last year did Shields seem to be so vulnerable. But then again, last year was such an improvement over what Shields did in 2009 and 2010, is this just Shields reverting to form after a career season or just a bad stretch? He is 6-4, which...

Jennings activated from DL, in Rays lineup

The Tampa Bay Rays activated outfielder Desmond Jennings from the 15-day disabled list and have him batting leadoff for the opener of a three-game series against the New York Yankees. Rays get needed win before battle in Bronx

ST. PETERSBURG Considering how cold their bats have been at home lately, it looked for a while Sunday as if the only thing the Tampa Bay Rays would be hitting was the road. Maddon frustrated by infield's fielding slump

It's hard to win with pitching and defense when the defense commits three errors and the starting pitcher allows a game-changing grand slam on an 0-2 fastball. That was the scenario Tuesday at Yankee Stadium when the Tampa Bay Rays lost 7-0 to the Yankees and fell back into a tie for first place with the Baltimore Orioles.
