The Miami Marlins lost Saturday’s game to the Boston Red Sox 4-1 with the lone highlight being an Austin Kearns homerun.    The loss moved the Marlins to 0-7-2 in their last nine games with their last win coming back on March 15th.    The Marlins have a week left in Jupiter before heading to Marlins Park for the final two games of the Grapefruit League.

Wade LeBlanc, the Marlins’ best pitcher this Spring started the game and lasted five innings in which he allowed two earned runs on five hits.   LeBlanc also struck out four and walked none.   The veteran who was acquired from the San Diego Padres in the off-season is a virtual lock to make the team and should serve as the long man in the bullpen.   J.D. Martin, Heath Bell and Gary Glover completed the rest of the pitching in the game.   Bell had his shakiest outing thus far but battled out of jam without allowing a run.  The closer gave up a walk and a hit while striking out one.

Kearns who is having one of the better Springs in all of baseball now has a team leading three homeruns and seven runs batted in.  After entering the Spring as a longshot to make the team, Kearns now is considered a favorite to win a bench spot.     It would appear Kearns will beat out Aaron Rowand for the spot with another bench spot going to either Chris Coghlan or Bryan Petersen.   Coghlan was 0-3 in the game while Petersen was 0-1 in a pinch-hit appearance.   Most of the regulars had the day off as they prepare for a two game roadtrip.

On Sunday the Marlins will take on the Tampa Bay Rays with ace Josh Johnson scheduled to start.  For the Rays, it will be Wade Davis.
