Jim Breen comes down hard against hard slotting for the draft: As one big league scout said when asked about the effects of a hard-slotting system, “Kids would go play other sports. Plain and simple. For example, there’s no way in hell Zach Lee is playing baseball right now with a hard-slot system.” Lee committed to LSU to play quarterback prior to being drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first-round of the 2010 Draft. It was largely assumed that his commitment was ironclad and the Dodgers were merely saving money by drafting a player they couldn’t sign, but the Dodgers shocked the baseball world by shelling out over $5 million to lure Lee away from LSU into professional baseball. That scenario would not have even been possible in a world of hard-slotting. The recommended slot bonus for the #28 pick in the 2010 Draft was $1,134,000, which would not have even gotten the conversation started with Zach Lee and his agent. The Dodgers would have lost (arguably) the top prospect i...

Los Angeles Dodgers: Keeping Up with the K’s

The Dodgers are reportedly moving ahead in an effort to sign outfielder Matt Kemp to a long term deal in spite of ownership turmoil. Kemp becomes a free agent after the 2012 season. (LA Times) The soon-to-be-auctioned-off Los Angeles Dodgers are at least projecting the illusion it is business as usual this off season. Reports are the team has entered into contract talks with superstar...

Dennis Gilbert Introduces Billionaires Bruce Karsh And Josh Friedman To The Dodgerstakes

Never heard of Karsh or Friedman? Don't worry, I hadn't either until Steve Dilbeck made mention of them today. They're billionaire money managers at Oaktree Capital Management and Canyon Capital Partners, respectively. Gilbert is an executive with the Chisox and was previously a player agent. Gilbert also was involved in building a youth diamond at Southwest College,...

O'Malley to oversee former Dodgertown complex

Peter OMalley is already back with the Dodgers. Sort of. At least in one curious way. Minor League Baseball announced Thursday it was going into a new partnership with OMalley, his sister Terry Seidler and former Dodgers pitchers Hideo Nomo and Chan Ho Park to operate the old Dodgertown complex in Vero Beach, Fla. Renamed the Vero Beach Sport Village after Frank and Jamie McCourt...

Broxton: why is a 27 y/o closer willing to take a 1yr deal

Andy Martino of the Daily News took a look at what closers would fit into the Mets plans.  Sandy Alderson said the team would be going outside the organization for next year's closer, with the payroll cuts it will have to be someone on a short term, low base salary, incentive laden deal.  Martino brought up Brad Lidge, Joe Nathan and Jonathan Broxton.  In the article Broxton...

Dodgers, Kemp discussing long-term contract

The Dodgers, unlikely to pursue top-tier free agents Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder because the team is for sale, nonetheless are in negotiations on a long-term contract for Matt Kemp.

Pirates sign Rod Barajas

I am super-super busy today so I have to wait a bit before I can give much analysis, but the Pirates have signed Rod Barajas to a one-year deal with a club option for 2013. As far as upgrading the defense behind the plate with a guy that might hit a little, Barajas makes plenty of sense.

Backup Backstop

The Pirates signed Rod Barajas to be their backup catcher: Remember the other day when I looked at the contracts for Willie Bloomquist, Chien-Ming Wang, and Juan Rivera, and worried that this was going to be a completely insane winter? Yeah, you can add that to the list, because, wow. Four million for Rod Barajas! Based on his last four years, $4 million is not out of line...

A federal bankruptcy judge says Fox will have a chance to challenge the Los Angeles Dodgers if the team attempts to sell future television rights along with the franchise.

Pirates ink C Barajas to one-year deal

Judge vows that Fox Sports will get a fair say in Dodgers sale

Network, whose television contract prevents the team from negotiating with any other party besides Fox through Nov. 30, 2012, is opposed to the Dodgers' intention of selling their television rights separately from the club.Fox Sports will get a "full and fair" say as the U.S. Bankruptcy Court decides whether to approve an agreement under which Dodgers owner Frank McCourt...
