Seth Smith had a two-run double among his three hits, and the Oakland Athletics scored three unearned runs off Paul Maholm in the first inning and beat the Chicago Cubs 4-3 in a game between split squads Saturday. Cubs catcher Geovany Soto, playing in just his fifth game of the spring, homered on the first pitch of the fourth inning, and former Oakland outfielder David DeJesus tripled and scored in the first. Maholm allowed three runs - none earned - on two hits, walking two and striking out three. A's starter Travis Schlichting, making his first start after three relief appearances in spring training, allowed a run on two hits in three innings. Soto added a double, but teammate Marlon Byrd was thrown out at home on the sixth-inning hit.

2012 Cubs Playing Time Projections

Many of you who have been reading this blog or ACB before it are familiar with the playing time projections we've set up each year. Back in 2008 and 2009 we had a lot of people filling the surveys out. There was a lot of excitement among Cubs fans before each of those seasons and it led to many more completed surveys than I had ever anticpated. As the Cubs have begun to suck...

Projecting the 2012 Cubs: Jeff Samardzija

Since Jeff Samardzija is now a "near-lock" to make the rotation, per Dale Sveum. Let's take a look at his projections for 2012. Just about everyone projected him as a reliever, though a few of them had him making 1-3 starts. It's enough that I'm not going to worry about trying to split all of those numbers out. Here's his projection as a reliever and roughly...

Daily Facepalm 3.16.12 – Too Much Chalk Edition

Was there a Cubs game yesterday? I was so in shock at Wisconsin's ability to score more than 60 points that I failed to pay attention to yesterday's games. It looks like it was probably a good thing. In the Dbacks game, Ryan Dempster gave up eight hits and a walk in three and 2/3 innings, but shocklingly only three runs. Every 2012-relevant pitcher who played in that game...

Season Previews: Oakland Athletics

With Spring Training well underway, it's time for one of our favorite things in all the world: Season Previews. Five years ago, they began as a semi-serious analysis and ended up as half-assed haiku. We're just gonna go with what we know. Finishing our preview of the American League West, here is a sneak peek at the 2012 Oakland Athletics. Goodbye to Gio So long Bailey...

Fantasy Forecast: Oakland A's

Author: Andrew SwansonOakland Athletics’ GM Billy Beane’s unconventional management methods were the focus of Michael Lewis’ 2003 blockbuster book Moneyball.  By focusing on on-base percentage and other saber metric tools, Beane was able to build a successful ball club with one of the lowest payrolls in baseball. Beane has continued his excellent work at the helm of the A’s...

Fantasy Forecast: Chicago Cubs

Author: Andrew SwansonAt 75-87, the Chicago Cubs gave their fans yet another disappointing season in 2010, as the team continued its long and storied tradition of losing. The year started out with an ominous beginning, as the volatile Carlos Zambrano and manager Lou Pinella had a well publicized feud over Zambrano’s struggles on the mound. The team’s struggles continued as...

Rawhide Keeps Them Doggies Movin' at Fitch Park

Dan Vogelbach and Dustin Geiger slugged back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the 8th inning, and the Chiefs had the tying and winning runs in scoring position with no outs in the bottom of the 9th but could not score, as the South Bend Silver Hawks (Diamondbacks Full-Season Class-A affiliate) rode a two-run Jimmy Comerate triple and took advantage of four errors, holding-on to...
