Ringing nobody up

Yes, we do take some pleasure in this. I am not a Heath Bell fan. Don’t like his schtick, his demeanor, nothing really. It also didn’t help that, as a Mets fan, he trashed his time in Queens saying the Mets weren’t honest with him and he harbored a lot of hostility and blah, blah, blah. Plus, what kind of ******* does this:

So, where was I? Oh yes, the pleasure in “this.” “This” would be Bell’s hugely disappointing performance during the first half of the MLB season. Frankly, I hadn’t paid too much attention until I recently was checking out some Marlins blogs and forums where the ripping of Bell was both hilarious and relentless — and the numbers give credence to the criticism. Despite 19 saves, Bell has been an up-and-down train wreck through 81 games. His 2-5 record tells little of the story. The 6.75 ERA, 1.817 WHIP and 43 hits in 34.2 innings start to lay it out a bit more.

Bell blew his sixth game of the season this past Sunday on a walkoff hit at St. Louis. At least Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen has his closer’s back:

“We didn’t lose because of the play at the plate. We lost because Heath Bell couldn’t do the job”

It’s only half a season of work, but let’s just say the 3-year $27M deal the Fish inked with Bell isn’t looking like the best of 2012 signings so far. Oh, and we’re all broken up over it.
