I just joined Twitter because they made me.  You can follow me there @CubicSnarkonia.  Yay? Anyways, Anno collected some of the most relevant tweets.  I’m too lazy to try to embed them all so will just put them in quotes and you can all deal. Here’s one about the recently-departed (to Arizona, not Heaven) Bob Brenly: @PWSullivan: Crane declines to comment on the botched negotiations with Brenly. @BNightengale: The Chicago #Cubs contacted Mark DeRosa about becoming color broadcaster before hiring Jim Deshaies. DeRosa wound up signing with #BlueJays @GDubCub: Ricketts calls WGN’s national footprint a “factor” in upcoming negotiations of local TV rights. Obv. BIG $ will have the final say.#TexPhiLA There’s really nothing to say.  WGN’s deal with the Cubs expires after 2014 and they couldn’t guarantee Brenly more than two years.  I guess the Cubs pay some of the salary, but I don’t think they were sneaky or deceitful in any way.  Bob was more than gracious about his replacement in Jim DeShaies, so no hard feelings and this is pretty much a non-story.  The Cubs will likely try to work something out with WGN since that’s how a lot of national Cubs fans get drawn in, but their primary concern needs to be making money.  The Mark DeRosa thing is kind of cool, but DeShaies was a fan favorite in Houston and like with Len and Bob, that’s tough to do when your team is pure crap. @GDubCub: During T.Ricketts’ annual media address, he says more night games for Wrigley off the table for 2013. @CSNMooney: #Cubs chairman Ricketts described payrolls from the final Tribune years as “unsustainable” in current context. @GDubCub: TR says in-stadium signage changes not coming this year. @CSNMooney: Ricketts: No extra night games/signage at Wrigley in ’13; playing elsewhere during renovation not on the table; Arizona St. deal’s dead.   @GDubCub: TR says hopes to get enough clearance on city ordinance restrictions in the next 2 weeks to start work this construction season. The city and neighborhood is probably going to continue to push back on the night games front, but since a renovated Wrigley is pretty important for the sustained business in the area, eventually something will give.  I think the item about the payroll being unsustainable suggests that revenue isn’t at the level they need it to be in order to make sound business sense.  And y’know, baseball is an expensive hobby and they have to do it right…or else it’ll be Tribune v2.0 and that’s bad.  The part about Arizona State we already knew, and it’s likely that rather than the Cubs being dicks, ASU just didn’t want to pony up the extra cash they needed to make it worth the Cubs’ while.  Cubs stuff should be used for primarily Cubs purposes and I’m glad the priorities were set right. @CarrieMuskat: #Cubs Ricketts joked his message to players was “real Knute Rockne stuff, real emotional — I think there were some tears in there.” The owner talking to his team at the beginning of spring training is standard operating procedure.  I’m certain this was a much more pleasant speech and interaction than whatever Jeff Loria has cooking in Miami right now. @GDubCub: TR also reiterates what he’s long said: Team has no scenario on table in which it’ll accelerate pace of project and play elsewhere. Sit tight, Cubs fans.  It’s gonna be a hell of a ride, especially with no shortcuts.  Feel free to write angry letters to Tom Ricketts explaining why he should throw $200MM at aging, declining free agents.  I’d be happy to hear the responses to those letters.
