So we finally have the truth of it from the man himself. Alfonso Soriano is a ******* hardass. “Lou said it’s not good to play on one leg,” said Soriano, who had cortisone shot in the knee Sunday. “I was 80 percent, but now I’m down to 50 or 60 percent. I play with my knee on my mind, and I’m scared to get hurt. If we’re out [of it], it’s better to do the surgery before we go to the Dominican [for the off-season].” No doubt the fuckwit beat guys and the mouthbreathers will seize upon the “scared” bit, and ignore the fact that Soriano has guttily played a large portion of the season on one leg. ******* ouch. And in case anyone was unaware, it’s not easy to play baseball on one leg. But no, they won’t give him any credit for being a regular hardass. Nope, they’ll say his selfish desire to play hurt the team, or some such nonsense. Thankfully, Lou’s smarter than that group of miscreants: “I had a talk with him before the game and the crux of it is his knee is not strong,” Piniella said. “He’s having trouble playing on it, hitting on it and, in fairness to him, we’re going to have him continue all his exercises with our trainer and revisit this thing down the road. “There’s no timetable, but for now, we appreciate the fact he wants to play, that he’s a gamer and that he wants to help us. “But at this time, because of the knee, he’s not able to do that, so we’re going to play Sammy Fuld and whatever else we have to do out in left field.” Two things from this quote: 1.) Lou must really hate the idea of Jake Fox playing LF, because it seems like Fuld’s going to get the bulk of the PT out there in Sori’s absence, while Fox is just part of the “whatever else we have to do.” It’s really too bad Fox is so epically bad on defense, because this would be a good chance for him to prove himself. 2.) It’s nice to see Lou stick up for Sori and point out just how gutty of a performance this has been, and that if the Cubs hadn’t shut him down, Sori would’ve have kept going out there. Cub fans profess to want that type of grittiness in a player. In fact, many Cub fans and some of the beat guys criticized the Milton Bradley signing because Bradley wasn’t perceived to possess just this drive to play past the hurt. What is more, I think Cub fans really do want to see this kind of drive in a player…just so long as that player isn’t Alfonso Soriano. Because he’s selfish and lazy, you see. So, to sum up, Alfonso Soriano is tougher than you.
