TEAMS: Arizona Diamondbacks, Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals, Miami Marlins
The Arizona Diamondbacks in recent weeks attempted to negotiate a multiyear contract with left-hander Joe Saunders. But the two sides could not agree upon a deal, and the team took the dramatic step Monday night of declining to offer Saunders a contract, according to a major-league source.
Saunders, 30, immediately becomes one of the more attractive lefties available on the free-agent market, joining Paul Maholm and Jeff Francis. Over the past two seasons, Saunders' numbers were comparable to those of Mark Buehrle, who recently signed a four-year, $58 million free-agent deal with the Miami Marlins.
It is highly unlikely that Saunders will command a contract even close to that level, but he went 21-30 with a 4.07 ERA in 415 1/3 innings in 2010-11. Buerhle was 26-22 with a 3.94 ERA in 415 2/3 innings.
The Diamondbacks also did not offer right-hander Micah Owings a contract on Monday. The team will continue trying to re-sign Owings and Saunders, the sources said.
Owings, 29, went 8-0 with a 3.57 ERA in 33 appearances last season, four starts.

Report: Red Sox Interested in Diamondbacks Pitcher Joe Saunders
The Red Sox haven't yet added the starting pitching help they seek. But they've checked in on some hurlers, including the Arizona Diamondbacks' Joe Saunders. The Sox are one of a few teams interested in the left-hander, according to the Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro. Saunders is coming off a season in which he went 12-13 with a 3.69 ERA. He is 69-52 with a 4.16...
Could Joe Saunders Be A Fit For The Cubs’ Rotation?
The non-tender deadline came and went on Monday, without a great deal of surprises from either the AL or NL. Most of those who were non-tendered were expected to be so, including Cubs backup catcher Koyie Hill, who was the only player non-tendered by the Cubs.
While the Cubs are likely to check in on plenty of names in the coming weeks, one name that was non-tendered on Monday could...
Joe Saunders, Micah Owings Non-Tendered by Arizona Diamondbacks
Both Joe Saunders and Micah Owings might not be back for the 2012 season for the Diamondbacks. Saunders, Arizona’s number three starter in 2011 and Owings, who saw somewhat of a renaissance in his return to the desert, were both non-tendered by Arizona on Monday, according to numerous media outlets.
During this past season, Saunders put together one of his best seasons of his...
D-backs to add Saito; Saunders, Owings gone
The Diamondbacks continued to shuffle their pitching staff Monday, moving to acquire free-agent reliever Takashi Saito while turning loose Joe Saunders and Micah Owings.
Saito, a career closersetup man, looks to be the final piece for a bullpen that was one of the major reasons for the D-backs turnaround last season. The D-backs are expected to announce his acquisition Tuesday....
Joe Saunders May Be Tempting Option for Red Sox, But Contact-Heavy Lefty May Not Be Best Fit
One of the common refrains you hear as a young pitcher growing up is, "Pitch to contact." You're taught to work in the strike zone, hit your spots, let 'em hit it and the defense will do the rest. That's all well and good for the most part. Unless, of course, you're a left-handed pitcher taking on AL East lineups with half of your starts coming at Fenway...
Joe Saunders Has Unexpectedly Become a Prized Free Agent
According to Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com, the Arizona Diamondbacks have non-tendered LHP Joe Saunders. Saunders, affectionately known as "Saundo" by Angels and D-Back fans alike, was 12-13 last year for the NL West division champions. He sported a solid 3.69 ERA across a career-high 212 innings. Most notably, Saunders was a main component of the trade that sent Dan...

D’Backs will non-tender Joe Saunders
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports says the Diamondbacks will non-tender LHP Joe Saunders tonight, but will try to to re-sign him.
Last week, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic said the Diamondbacks offered Saunders a new two-year contract, and rather than non-tendering Saunders, GM Kevin Towers recently said they intend to either sign Saunders or trade him.
