The Diamondbacks and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt have agreed to terms on a five-year contract extension, according to multiple reports Friday morning. FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports the extension, which covers the 2014 to 2018 seasons, is worth 32 million and includes a team option for 2019. The deal covers all of Goldschmidt's arbitration years and at least one year of free agency. News of the deal first came from ESPN's Jim Bowden. Goldschmidt, 25, has just 193 games of major league experience after being called up in August 2011 and becoming the D-backs' everyday first baseman during their National League West title run. Last year, Goldschmidt hit .286 with a .359 on-base percentage, .490 slugging percentage, 82 RBI and 20 home runs. He also ranked third among NL first basemen with 43 doubles. The D-backs approached Goldschmidt early this spring about negotiating a long-term deal but he initially declined, wanting to think it over and presumably betting on a big season. The team approached him again, and he'd apparently done all the thinking he needed to. An eighth-round draft pick out of Texas State in 2009, Goldschmidt has already become a franchise cornerstone for the D-backs, who have raved about his work ethic and character. "Goldy is a model citizen and a model organization guy," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said Thursday when asked if he hoped an extension got done before Opening Day on Monday. "You'd want anybody to emulate Paul Goldschmidt. I have no reservations about that at all." Goldschmidt's extension is the fourth the D-backs have given since the end of the 2012 season. Closer J.J. Putz, second baseman Aaron Hill and third baseman Martin Prado also got extended deals.
