KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Justin Verlander has accrued virtually every individual honor available to a starting pitcher: a Rookie of the Year award and World Series Game 1 start in 2006; a no-hitter in 2007; Most Valuable Player and Cy Young awards, along with the second no-hitter of his career, in 2011. Tuesday, he will add yet another: a start for the American League in the All-Star Game. American League manager Ron Washington has chosen Verlander as his starting pitcher for the 83rd All-Star Game, a major league source told FOXSports.com. The assignment will become official at a Monday news conference. Verlander, 29, likely would have been the AL starter last season, but he was ineligible to pitch because he started for the Detroit Tigers on the final Sunday before the All-Star break. This year, there are no such complications. Verlanders most recent start his major league-leading fifth complete game of the season was a victory over Minnesota on the Fourth of July. He will have fi...

Verlander hellish ride en route to ballpark

DETROIT -- Good thing Justin Verlander wasn't starting Sunday or his whole routine would have been thrown off. Let's just say the ride in was a bit of an adventure. "I got a ride to the stadium from Town Car, as I usually do on days that I travel," Verlander said after Sunday's 7-1 Tigers victory over Kansas City. "On the way there, about 10 minutes out...

Verlander ramps it up before melting down

Justin Verlander wanted to give the fans an All-Star show. The Tigers' ace certainly did that Tuesday night, though not in the way he intended. The reigning AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner offered a steady series of 100 mph fastballs that National League hitters sent soaring all over picturesque Kauffman Stadium. Verlander was hammered for five runs in the first inning as...

After winning the American League MVP last season, Justin Verlander might be even more important to the Detroit Tigers in 2012. The overpowering right-hander has already thrown a career-high five complete games this year, bolstering a struggling rotation and helping the Tigers stay in the thick of the AL Central race. No, he's not likely to go 24-5 again, but Verlander - the...

Cain vs. Verlander: Best of their era?

Tony La Russa doesn't concern himself with storylines. If he did, he would have chosen New York Mets' knuckleballing sensation R.A. Dickey to start the All-Star Game. Instead, La Russa picked San Francisco's Matt Cain as the National League starter and created a different theme to the pitching matchup for tonight's All-Star Game (MLB on FOX, 7:30 p.m. ET). The subplot...

Matt Cain to Start Over R.A. Rickey in All-Star Game While Justin Verlander Gets American League Nod

The knuckleball will have to come on in relief. Matt Cain has been picked by Tony La Russa to start the All-Star Game for the National League, John Harper of the New York Daily News reports. That means knuckleball sensation R.A. Dickey won't be leading the team despite going 12-1 with a 2.40 ERA and 123 strikeouts over the first half of the season for the Mets. Source says Dickey...

Is Kate Upton dating Justin Verlander?

No, Ellen DeGeneres, Kate Upton is not dating Mark Sanchez. But she might be dating Justin Verlander. Over the weekend, Upton was seen (drunk?) in Verlander’s suite at a Tigers game in Detroit. They were in that MLB 2k12 commercial together earlier in this year, after all. So, it might have been a case of a friend simply hooking up a friend. But there’s more to this picture...

Bernie On The Scene-At the All Star Game

I was listening to sports talk radio tonight driving back to the hotel after the All Star Game. I heard to hosts talking about how boring the game was. How it needed to change. How stupid it is to have so many players on each team. I didn't think it was boring. I thought it was fascinating. There were so many stories to cover. So many people made an impression. Here are...
