Red Sox pitcher John Lackey always looks like he just smelled something bad. Now, I don't mean to pick on the guy. The big righthander this season has been one of Boston's most reliable starting pitchers. The vast majority of his starts have resulted in the opposition putting up little or no offense. But where opponents have scored few runs in Lackey's starts, the Red Sox have managed to score fewer runs. And maybe Lackey has that look on his face because the Boston offense flat-out reeks when he's pitching. ESPNBoston.com scribe Gordon Edes writes in a column that Lackey "should rank as one of baseball's big winner's this season." In 18 of 23 starts, Lackey has held opposing teams to three runs or fewer. His record, however, is 8-11. In last night's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chavez Ravine, the Red Sox mustered just two hits and plated exactly zero runs. Former Red Sox Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run bomb that would be the only offense the Dodgers needed to dispatch the boys from Boston. (An aside - the Red Sox are now percentage points behind the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the American League East. If you listen, you can hear all 14 of their fans cheering). Edes notes that last night's game was the tenth time Boston has been shut out this season. The losing pitcher in five of those games? You guessed it: John Derran Lackey. Jon Lester, who's looking for his twelfth win, will take on the Dodgers and starter Hyun-Jin Ryu at 4:05 p.m. Here's to hoping Lester gets more run support today than has been given to Lackey this season.
