(Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images)This was the one game you figured the Red Sox might lose. Hiroki Kuroda has been the most consistent hurler for The Evil Ones—logging nine starts without yielding an earned run. So, the Carmine Hose promptly slapped him around Fenway today (5 runs on 11 hits)—on the way to a much-needed 6-1 win. The victory makes Boston the only team in Major League Baseball to avoid a four-game losing streak this year. John Lackey out-pitched Kuroda—getting his first post-All-Star Break win. Lackey went 6 2/3 innings, giving up just the one earned run on six hits. Offensively, four Red Sox batters had multiple hit games—led by Jacoby Ellsbury's 3 for 5 performance with 2 RBIs. David Ortiz hit his 24th HR. Tampa Bay's loss puts the Boston lead back up to two full games in the AL East.
