News came out yesterday that the Sox re-signed Scott Podsednik -- sent to Arizona in the Craig Breslow deal, but immediately released -- for the remainder of the season. The perplexing move was seemingly injury insurance, but now Dan Roche says the Sox are assigning Podsednik to the big club and sending down Ryan Kalish.
I'm inclined to say this move is insane, but the motivation is clear: Kalish isn't getting everyday at bats with Crawford and Ellsbury playing every day, and Cody Ross hanging around slugging .500+. This way, Kalish gets to stay sharp and Podsednik can fill the speed-off-the-bench role.
Whatever keeps Kalish progressing to being an everyday OF for the Sox next year, I approve.
In other news, Boston signed a 16-year old Venezuelan pitcher. Se gusta cerveza? I hope so.

The Boston Red Sox have signed veteran outfielder Scott Podsednik just over a week after trading him to Arizona.
Podsednik batted .387 with one home run and seven RBI in 19 games for the Red Sox before being dealt to the Diamondbacks on July 31. He was released by Arizona after declining an assignment to Triple-A Reno.

The Red Sox are looking for anything to give them a spark as they try to avoid falling out of contention -- and their latest search has led them to an old friend. After trading him to the Diamondbacks along with Matt Albers for Craig Breslow, the Red Sox re-signed Scott Podsednik on Thursday night. Podsednik, who had been released by Arizona after refusing to accept an assignment...

Boston third baseman Will Middlebrooks was hit in the wrist with a pitch and reportedly could be out a while. See the details of the injury and the timetable for his return here.
Scott Podsednik makes his return to the Red Sox lineup on Friday night against Cleveland, and while that might not sound like a lot, it could make all the difference for this one. After all, with the Sox in need of a win in any way possible, every little bit will help, regardless of where it comes from. The same, however, could be said for the Indians, who are playing with a little...
In the ninth inning of a 3-2 win over the Cleveland Indians last night, Will Middlebrooks was hit by a Esmil Rogers fastball and was forced to leave the game. Manager Bobby Valentine sounded pessimistic about the prognosis immediataly after the game, and news broke late last night that Middlebrooks did indeed break his right wrist.
The injury is expected to sideline Middlebrooks...
Felix Doubront is going to be shut down, but not entirely. Bobby Valentine told reporters in Cleveland on Friday that the 24-year-old starter will be skipped over in the rotation for his next scheduled start, in favor of Aaron Cook. Doubront, who had been in line to start again against Baltimore, is expected to be available out of the bullpen if the Sox need him. Doubront has pitched...
So much has gone wrong for the Red Sox this season that it's hard to pick out just one reason for the team's struggles. You could call out the club's inconsistent starting pitching, injuries, untimely hitting, so on and so forth. Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino isn't ready to place blame on any one area, though. "There is no single source, there'...
Clay Buchholz is an ace. Right now, the Boston starter is pitching at about as high of a level as a pitcher can be, and the Red Sox have needed exactly that. Friday night, the offense was able to scratch together enough runs for another Buchholz gem to hold up, and the Sox held on for the 3-2 win over the Cleveland Indians. It's an important win -- and the kind of game that the...
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero hit home plate umpire Dale Scott in the mask with a foul tip during the fourth inning of Friday night's MLB game at Chase Field against the Washington Nationals, forcing Scott to leave the game.
It was a 1-1 pitch from Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg, which happened to be a 93 mile-per-hour fastball. The foul tip by Montero...
The Red Sox head into Cleveland with a chip on their shoulders after losing two straight to the Rangers, finishing off their 10-game home stand with a 55-57 record. Now they turn their attention to the road and hope for better results against the Indians. Pedro Ciriaco is back in the lineup, taking over at second base for hot-hitting Dustin Pedroia. Not to worry, though, Pedey'...
Every Red Sox fans know how important 2011 first round pick Matt Barnes means to the organization but it’s another pitcher prospect in right hander Brandon Workman who is making big strides in 2012. CLEVELAND -- No one was more impressed than Cleveland Indians manager Manny Acta. He made that clear after Boston's Clay Buchholz dominated Cleveland's lineup with a two-hit complete game in the Red Sox's 3-2 victory Friday night. "That's the best game I've seen pitched against us all year and it wasn't even a shutout," Acta said. Buchholz...

Consider it a quick vacation. Now, it's back to work. Scott Podsednik has signed a major league contract with the Red Sox, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. If accurate, the signing comes less than two weeks after Podsednik was traded by the Sox with Matt Albers to the Diamondbacks in exchange for Craig Breslow. Podsednik never ended up appearing in a game with the...
