Just how far can playing the matchups on free agency take you? Could a full season of waiver wire-caliber second basemen equal a year’s worth of Neil Walker? Those are the questions we seek to answer with another edition of our Spot Start Squad. Expanded Notes Anyone else shocked to see Wellington Castillo batting a robust .500 in 32 at-bats vs. LHP? Wandy Rodriguez isn’t the toughest lefty, but I’d start Castillo against any southpaw right now with the likely exception of Clayton Kershaw. Like Castillo, Carlos Quentin hammers lefties. He’s also 2-for-2 with a homer against Drew Pomeranz. If you need a homer, there’s probably no one better to add than Pedro Alvarez. He’s cooled down a bit of late, but Jason Berken isn’t the toughest opponent. I’m not a huge fan of Carlos Villanueva, but I am a fan of anyone facing the Red Sox. When Cody Ross is the meat of the middle of your team’s lineup, you know you’re in trouble. Pretty much no one on that team is hitting, and that’s good news ...
