Updated 11:00 AM – Here are the latest injury updates and other news from PSL this morning… Justin Turner According to Jorge Castillo of the Star Ledger, there’s a good possibility that if David Wright is ready for Opening Day and Daniel Murphy is not, Justin Turner could start at second base. In that scenario, Jordany Valdespin would start in center field instead of Collin Cowgill, with Lucas Duda and Marlon Byrd at left and right. Turner, who batted .269 with two home runs and 19 RBI last season, didn’t travel with the team to Kissimmee, Florida last night when the Mets played the Astros, but is said to be recovering Shaun Marcum There are some growing concerns surrounding right-hander Shaun Marcum, who was signed to replace R.A. Dickey in the rotation.  Marcum has already missed a couple of starts to strengthen his shoulder at the start of Grapefruit League play. Today, we learned that he received a cortisone injection for a right shoulder impingement at the Hospital for Special ...

Roundtable: Does Justin Turner deserve a roster spot?

Josh Satin didn’t get much of a chance this Spring and has already been sent down, which bums me out a little.  So, I asked my friends in the blogosphere the following question: Assuming he’s healthy, does Justin Turner deserve a spot on the Opening Day roster? These people all do great work and their names are hyperlinked to their blogs so please go ahead and click on them...

Mets Notes: Turner Injury Update, Spin Leading Off, Niese Starts Tonight

The Mets will be in action tonight against the Miami Marlins at 7:05 at Roger Dean Stadium. Newly appointed Opening Day Starter Jonathan Niese will be on the hill, and Jordany Valdespin will bat lead off. Including tonight’s contest, the Mets have just ten Grapefruit League games left to play, and will play their final game on March 30. Four of the Mets ten remaining games will...

Murphy Starting The Season On The DL Getting Closer To Reality, Wright Improving

Murphy and Wright are staring the DL in the face due to intercostal injuries. It’s starting to look more and more like Daniel Murphy will begin the 2013 season on the disabled list. Terry Collins had recently stated that if Murphy didn’t play in a major league level tune-up by this coming weekend, that he didn’t think he would be ready for the Opening Day. There is virtually...

Daniel Murphy could start the year on DL

Photo taken by Michael Baron New York Mets second baseman, Daniel Murphy, who has been sidelined since February 18th with a strained intercostal muslce, is in serious jeopardy of starting the season on the disabled list. On Wednesday afternoon, Mets manager Terry Collins told reporters Murphy is more likely to start the year on the disabled list over David Wright and according...

Trading Daniel Murphy Could Benefit The Mets

‘Spin Watch 2013 rolls on with another multi-hit game against the Houston Astros. I don’t know how many different ways I can say “Jordany Valdespin’s numbers have been impressive this spring.” He’s now batting .348/.388/.996. He also leads the team in hits (16), home runs (4), RBIs (9) and runs scored (8). He’s been so impressive, in fact, that Terry Collins’ latest...

Mets' Santana to start season on DL

As expected, New York Mets lefty Johan Santana will start the season on the disabled list while he works to strengthen his pitching shoulder. Mets manager Terry Collins announced the plan Friday before a game against the Miami Marlins. The 33-year-old Santana hasn't pitched in a spring training game this year ''He's not going to open with us,'' Collins said...

Not Optimistic About Wright And Murphy Being Ready By Opening Day

Opening Day is rapidly approaching, and it doesn’t look as if either David Wright and Daniel Murphy will make it to Flushing on time. Wright told reporters he was in the World Baseball Classic where he played at an intense level, which shouldn’t put him at a disadvantage. “I’m in a better position than Murphy, obviously, because I’ve been playing in games and taking plenty...

No-Han 2.0 and Why Sequels Always Suck

It’s long been said that sequels are rarely ever as good as the original. It’s an undeniable truth. Of course there are exceptions like The Empire Strikes Back or The Godfather: Part Two, but for the most part sequels genuinely suck, to put it bluntly. No-Han was everything any Met fan could have ever hoped for last season and when it happened there wasn’t a dry eye in the...

Santana To Stay Back; Wright, Marcum Updates

The Mets finally confirmed the obvious and said Johan Santana won’t be on the Opening Day roster. Considering he hadn’t thrown since his look-at-me-I’m-angry stunt, March 6, there was no suspense to this move. “He’s not where he needs to be in his long-toss program,’’ manager Terry Collins told reporters in one of spring trainings’ biggest understatements. “Even...

Over Half Mets’ Payroll Could Be On DL Opening Day

According to the Mets’ timetable, today could greatly determine the make-up of their Opening Day roster and line-up, which probably won’t resemble anything you imagined a month ago. Not even close. WRIGHT: Will we know more today? The Mets hope to know more today of the status of third baseman David Wright and second baseman Daniel Murphy, both of whom have strained intercostal...

Mets’ Batting Order Analysis

Without David Wright and Daniel Murphy available because of strained intercostal muscles, manager Terry Collins doesn’t have much to work with regarding his everyday line-up, which seems to change every day. Here’s today’s Mets-Cardinals lineup and how it might translate to the regular season: Marlon Byrd, rf: If Jordany Valdespin makes the team as it appears, he’ll lead...

With Marcum on the mend, Mets rotation may be muddled

With reports earlier in the week suggesting that Johan Santana would not be ready to make his Opening Day start for the New York Mets, it was thought that Jon Niese would be likely to slide into his spot.  Santana has taken the ball for New York on Opening Day four of the past five seasons, but shoulder issues have left him unable to pitch for two weeks.  The 34-year-old lefty...

Injury Updates on Marcum and Santana Raise More Questions About Rotation

SHAUN MARCUM: Will cortisone shot and more rest relieve shoulder pain in time for Opening Day? Here are the latest injury updates from Terry Collins who addressed beat reporters before tonight’s 7-5 win over the Braves. Shaun Marcum There are some growing concerns surrounding right-hander Shaun Marcum, who was signed to replace R.A. Dickey in the rotation.  Marcum has already...

Mets Rotation Facing Huge Hurdles Ahead Of Season Opener

The worst-case scenario seems imminent for the Mets. They faced a myriad of pitching questions entering spring training, including: Johan Santana’s availability after shoulder surgery; Dillon Gee coming off surgery to repair an injury to his shoulder; and injury-prone Shaun Marcum. All three have been answered in the negative. One would think a free agent would report to camp in...

Shaun Marcum Added To Mets’ Injury List; Long Season Already Here

The worst-case scenario seems imminent for the Mets. They faced a myriad of pitching questions entering spring training, including: Johan Santana’s availability after shoulder surgery; Dillon Gee coming off surgery to repair an injury to his shoulder; and injury-prone Shaun Marcum.
