The trade deadline is a little more than a month away and we are starting to hear rumors out there of players who the Cardinals could be interested in. First it was Cliff Lee and then it was Jonathan Papelbon. These rumors will only pick up as we get closer to the deadline. I thought I would look at 5 players who could have trade value for the Cardinals and who are players the Cardinals could deal. 1. Matt Adams: I know the team has said several times that they are not interested in dealing Adams, but who knows what offer could pop up within the month? I believe that Adams’ worth is much higher to other teams than it is in St. Louis. What is Adams’ future role in St. Louis? It looks like it will be really hard not to bring back Carlos Beltran and Oscar Taveras should be ready next year, so that leaves Adams where he is this year, the bench. It would make sense for the Cards to move him while his stock is still relatively high to other teams. Read more…. Related articles St. Louis C...

Jonathan Papelbon ‘Not Pointing Fingers,’ But Says Phillies’ Fundamentals Must Improve

Jonathan Papelbon is apparently big on fundamentals. Papelbon, who blew two saves during a three-game set with the Nationals, isn’t pleased with the way the Phillies are playing, and he thinks the struggles can be attributed to recurring mistakes. “This is a game of fundamentals and we’ve got to do fundamentals right and keep grinding,” Papelbon said, according to CSNPhilly...

Does Jonathan Papelbon Want Out of Philadelphia and Vice-Versa?

At this point in the season and with the particular circumstances present, the question has to be asked, that of “does Jonathan Papelbon want out of Philadelphia?’ One can also presuppose the notion that Philadelphia might want Papelbon out of Philadelphia.Whichever way you may wish to look at the issue at hand, one thing for sure is that Papelbon’s time in Philadelphia may...

Cardinals rumors: Should St. Louis pursue Phillies' Cliff Lee?

The St. Louis Cardinals' rotation was sporting the lowest ERA in the majors entering play yesterday. Couple that with the fact that they have more starting candidates than they do rotation spots, and St. Louis doesn't appear to be a team in need of starting pitching help. However, considering the club could be depending on multiple young arms down the stretch, Bernie Miklasz...

Jonathan Papelbon, Cliff Lee ‘Absolutely Not’ on Trade Market, According to Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr.

While the Philadelphia Phillies struggle to achieve even a winning record, speculation persists that Cliff Lee and Jonathan Papelbon will be available before next month’s non-waiver trade deadline. That’s not necessarily the case. “Absolutely not, because these are guys I’d be better off having on my club than not,” Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told The Associated...

Five reasons the Cardinals DON’T need Jonathon Papelbon

Earlier this week, a Boston-based baseball writer speculated in his column that the Phillies believe that St. Louis might be interested in Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon. Mind you, there was no real substance behind his assertion, but it made the usual rumor-mill rounds all the same. This move would make no sense for the Cardinals, and here are five reasons why: 1) Salary. Papelbon...

Davey: "It's too early for me to watch the scoreboard."

Phillies 4, Nationals 2: Nats offense no match for Cliff Lee. Back to 2 games under .500, and a tie for 2nd place in the NL East with the Phillies. According to Davey Johnson in his postgame press conference (video here), no need to think about about the missed opportunity with the Braves losing both games of a double header to the Mets yesterday: "It's a long season...

Phillies rumors: Not trading Jonathan Papelbon, Cliff Lee

It's clear that middling teams playing in larger markets tend to be more hesitant to truly blow things up and turn their attention to the future (the Houston Astros being an outlier). According to Peter Gammons, this will seemingly have an impact on whether or not the Philadelphia Phillies trade starting pitcher Cliff Lee and closer Jonathan Papelbon this summer, something...

Eyeing A Sweep: Phils Send Kendrick Opposite Gio In Attempt To Sweep Nationals

With last night's 4-2 win over Washington, the Phillies not only sealed their second straight win, but they pulled within seven games of first place behind the Braves - tying the Nationals. Cliff Lee was superb even after an hour and 14 minute-long rain delay before the game started. Lee...

Stop with the Hamels 2013 and Lee 2012 comparisons

The first things some fans want to bring up in regards to Cole Hamels 2013 season is how similar Hamels’ run is to that of Cliff Lee in 2012. I will agree that Hamels deserves a couple more wins than he has, but Lee in 2012 outperformed Hamels to this point by a mile. Lee finished 2012 with a 6-9 record and a 3.16 ERA with 207 Ks in 217 IP. No question Lee has pitched better...
