The St. Louis Cardinals took care of the vast majority of their offseason needs before the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings last week in Orlando, but one nagging question remained. What if rookie second baseman Kolten Wong, who hit .153 in 32 games for the Cardinals in 2013, is not ready to handle the everyday duties at second base? The Cardinals scrounged what was left of the free-agent market after having already traded third baseman David Freese to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim to clear room for Matt Carpenter to move from second base to third base. And they found perhaps the perfect answer to the question: veteran second baseman Mark Ellis. The Cardinals signed Ellis to a one-year, $5.25-million contract to be the backup second baseman to be a mentor for Wong and fill in if Wong shows he needs more time to develop.
