JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- Giancarlo Stanton homered Tuesday on an 0-2 fastball over the plate, a pitch he's likely to seldom see this season. The Miami Marlins slugger hit his first homer of spring training in a 7-5 victory over the New York Mets. Stanton had 37 homers last year and led the NL in slugging. Because he's one of only two returning starters from opening day 2012 following an offseason payroll purge, he expects teams to pitch around him a lot. "With less than two outs, they're probably going to fool around with me a little bit more," he said. Stanton got a pitch he could handle against Hansel Robles. Matt Downs also homered off Robles. Casey Kotchman hit a grand slam in his first at-bat of spring training against Mets starter Jenrry Mejia. Kotchman had been sidelined for the past week after he ran into a pop-up machine during drills and needed four stitches to close a cut on his left ring finger. Mejia required 30 pitches to get through his one in...

HR Derby in Jupiter

The Miami Marlins hit three home runs including a grand slam on Tuesday to beat the New York Mets 7-5 and move to 2-1-1  on the Spring.   The slam came courtesy of Casey Kotchman who is trying to land a role at first base to begin the year.    Giancarlo Stanton and and Matt Downs hit their first long-balls of the Spring.   Downs is also involved in the first base competition...

Marlins owner Loria defends offseason moves

JUPITER, Fla. Several Miami Marlins headed to the clubhouse Tuesday morning by walking between a cluster of microphones, several video cameras and a group of reporters. Is Obama coming? outfielder Bryan Petersen asked. No. Media members were waiting for someone who actually had been more elusive than the president during the previous four months Jeffrey Loria. The Marlins owner...

Javier Vazquez ruled out of WBC, comeback attempt over?

Javier Vazquez’s comeback attempt may be over. After undergoing knee surgery last month the 36-year-old right handed pitcher has been ruled out of the upcoming World Baseball Classic. Vazquez was to play for Puerto Rico. Vazquez was trying to make a comeback this spring after sitting out the entire 2012 season.

Javier Vazquez won't pitch in the majors in 2013

Former Marlins, Yankees, and Braves starter Javier Vazquez will not pitch in the World Baseball Classic in March, and won't make a return to MLB this season. Vazquez had knee surgery in January, and that's the reason for him pulling out of the WBC as well as putting off plans to return to the majros in 2013. Despite impressing scouts in workouts this spring, it's...

Jeffrey Loria and Hoof in Mouth Disease

Contrary to popular belief, most writers covering sports do not enjoy writing articles month after month, year after year, in which they report nothing but negativity around this facet or that. In all honesty, it’s tiresome. At the same time, those of us that spend a great deal of time watching over teams, clubs, and leagues, are passionate and actively engaged in wanting to see...

MLB Injuries: Miami Marlins lose catcher with broken collarbone

The Miami Marlins will lose backup catcher Jeff Mathis for at least six weeks. The Marlins were taking on the St. Louis Cardinals in a grapefruit league spring training contest when Cardinals Matt Holliday fouled off a ball that came around and struck Mathis on his right clavicle. The injury now leaves the Marlins thin at catcher. Mathis was the only other catcher on the teams spring...

Tino Martinez eager for new role with Marlins

There was a time when Tino Martinez was certain that he would never coach. It's not that he didn't want to, necessarily. It was more that the grind of baseball - travel, long days, late nights, time away from the family - had taken its toll over the course of 16 seasons in the major leagues. ''I said, `Never again,''' Martinez said. ''When I...

Loria: I didn't renege on promises

A cluster of media stood outside the Miami Marlins clubhouse, awaiting the arrival of owner Jeffrey Loria, when outfielder Bryan Petersen walked past.

Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria goes on another rant, once again proves he doesn't get it

Apparently not yet satisfied with the public shaming he received after his full page "explanation" ad in a local paper, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria has now gone straight to the press to explain himself further. As you might expect, it didn't go well. In a progressively contentious 25-minute interview with the Miami Herald Loria proved that he is the arrogant, clueless...

Javier Vazquez won't pitch in 2013 due to knee injury

Free agent Javier Vazquez was hoping to return to the major league ranks this season, but his comeback attempt has been cut short due to a knee injury. The veteran right-hander will not pitch in 2013 as he recovers from meniscus surgery on his right knee, according to James Wagner of The Washington Post. Wagner adds that a retirement announcement could come soon from...

Who Wants To Be A Mets Outfielder? Part 4

Yesterday the Mets dropped a game to 7-5 to the Miami Marlins. Before we talk about the OF performance, let’s just go through some quick game notes. Game Notes: - Mejia had a bad outing allowed 5 runs, 4 earned in one inning of work. I would be more concerned about this but he also just got to camp, so he could easily be 2 weeks behind everyone else. I would also be more apathetic...

Giancarlo and Carlos

Jeffrey Loria and the Marlins front office need to save face as much as anyone since Harvey Dent (dated pop culture reference: check). One suggestion has been that they should re-sign their one remaining superstar, Giancarlo Stanton. That is easier said than done, given that Stanton publicly expressed displeasure in the immediate wake of the team’s massive trade with Toronto. Even...
