Watching Wednesday’s Cardinals-Brewers game, I couldn’t help thinking that Randy Wolf looked absolutely awful. Without checking, he must have gone 2-0 to at least five different batters. When he wasn’t falling behind, he was getting drilled.
But Wolf hung around for 6 innings, surrendering 5 runs and earning the win as the Brewers scored 10 behind their starter.
The point of this article isn’t to criticize Wolf, who should really have about 11 or 12 wins but has suffered from abysmal run support (3.32 runs/game, 11 games of 3 or fewer runs). Indeed, Wednesday’s game was like opposite day for Wolf: bad pitching, great result.
No – I thought I would pose the following question for the gallery (no play-indexing!):
How many pitchers have “earned” the win this year despite giving up 5 or more runs?
Closest person gets a prize. Just kidding, no you won’t.
