This Date in Pirates History: February 23

On this date in 2000, the Pittsburgh Pirates traded outfielder Al Martin for two minor leaguers and John Vander Wal. Neither of the two minor leaguers the Pirates got made the majors. James Sak was a 26 year old reliever who had just pitched in AAA for the first time in 1999. He struggled badly with the Pirates AAA team, was sent to AA and did just as bad before the Pirates got rid...

Frank Coonelly faces DUI charge

Pirates President Frank Coonelly was arrested two months ago in Ross Township for driving under the influence. The details are here in this Trib report, and Dejan’s column regarding the topic is excellent (as usual). I don’t know what else to really say about the charges. Driving under the influence is a terrible thing, obviously, and the law will deal with it appropriately....

Did the LA Angels miss a great opportunity with AJ Burnett?

For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past week, you may have missed the news on an Abreu-Burnett swap that was gracefully voided by A.J Burnett due to the Angels being in his no trade clause. What a bullet we dodged with that one, right? Burnett is an over-the-hill veteran, like Abreu, who has managed to pitch to Kazmirian levels of ineptitude the past two...

First Pitch: It’s Better to Have Never Tried At All

There’s a phenomenon when it comes to prospects. It’s called the “shiny new toy” syndrome. This syndrome is also the heart of the technological economy. The next cell phone you buy will be the greatest phone ever, and way better than the last phone you bought, which was the greatest cell phone ever. An iPad 3 coming out in March?
