Found March 15, 2013 on NESN.com:
While much of the focus continues to be on whether or not David Ortiz will be ready for Opening Day, there’s a completely separate issue brewing at the shortstop position. Stephen Drew, who suffered a concussion when he was hit in the helmet by a pitch on March 7, is still experiencing symptoms, and it’s unclear at this point when he’ll return to the diamond. “[Drew is] frustrated, because a lot of his normal everyday is normal. Yet when he gets to some loud areas, that has an affect,” Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters on Friday. “Any kind of quick movements, it’s almost like the vision takes a little bit of time there to catch up. There’s a little bit of a delay there. Those are all classic symptoms of a mild concussion.” Drew has been undergoing physical testing in an effort to monitor how he responds to strenuous activity, but he hasn’t played in a game since the March 7 beanball. Farrell said that it’s too early to tell how much time Drew will need to get back into gam...

David Ortiz Responding Favorably to Rest and Treatment, Could Take Batting Practice on Monday

David Ortiz‘s Opening Day status is still very much up in the air, but Friday brought some good news regarding the slugger’s health status. Ortiz, who was shut down for five-to-seven days on Sunday after an MRI revealed inflammation in both of his heels, is responding well to the rest and medication he’s getting. “Feels better. Symptoms have decreased. So the prescribed down...

Report: Alfredo Aceves Not Expected to Be Released Despite Questionable Conduct This Spring

Alfredo Aceves‘ brief World Baseball Classic stint only added to the pitcher’s controversial reputation. But don’t expect the Red Sox to make any drastic moves when it comes to the right-hander. CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman wrote in a column on Wednesday that the Red Sox should release Aceves because of his questionable behavior. It’s an opinion Heyman isn’t alone in, but...

Alfredo Aceves - Here We Go Again

You have to wonder just how much longer the Red Sox are going to put up with the antics of relief pitcher Alfredo Aceves. He wore out his welcome with the Yankees in 2010. There were the much-publicized conflicts with former manager Bobby Valentine in 2012. Earlier this spring, there was the live batting practice session that featured Aceves basically lobbing pitches, to the...

Red Sox Option Dan Butler, Alex Wilson to Triple-A Pawtucket After Solid Spring by Both Players

The Red Sox continue to trim their roster. The club announced after Friday’s game that catcher Dan Butler and pitcher Alex Wilson have been optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket, which is where both players concluded their 2012 season. This news came just hours after the Red Sox announced that pitchers Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster were optioned to Triple-A and catcher Christian...

Dempster solidifies spot in Red Sox rotation

On Thursday afternoon Ryan Dempster took the mound against the Minnesota Twins and pitched and had an excellent start. Dempster went 4 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits. He walked 2 batters and struck out 3. Dempster threw 73 pitches, 43 of them for strikes in his 4 inning outing. This start was the 4th appearance of the spring for Dempster who has pitched 12 2/3 innings allowing...

Franklin Morales' future with the Red Sox is in jeopardy

Things are not looking good for Red Sox pitcher Franklin Morales as he's traveling back to Boston to receive additional diagnosis and treatment for his ailing lower back. Morales was a key member (again it was the 2012 season so take that with a grain of salt) of the 2012 Red Sox pitching staff ending the year with a 3-4 record, 3.77 ERA in 37 games last season. Morales provided...

Franklin Morales Travels to Boston to Have Injured Back Examined, As Pitcher’s Status Still Hasn’t Improved

Franklin Morales gave the Red Sox a lot last season. If he is to do the same this season, the left-hander’s health will need to improve. Morales has been battling inflammation in his lower back since the start of camp, and the pitcher’s progress hasn’t exactly been encouraging. The Sox ultimately decided to send him back to Boston to see specialists about the injury. “He’s...

Red Sox-Orioles Live: Bryce Brentz to Make Spring Debut After Battling Back From Gunshot Wound to Leg

12:38 p.m.: The biggest thing to note in Friday’s lineup card for Game 1 is certainly Bryce Brentz. Brentz is making his spring training debut after accidentally shooting himself in the leg back in January. He’ll get the start in right field, and he’ll once again roam the outfield alongside Jackie Bradley Jr., who gets the start in center. Brentz, a first-round draft pick...

Red Sox Spring Training Delight - 3/16

After playing a split-squad doubleheader yesterday, the Boston Red Sox make the trip up I-75 to Port Charlotte, FL to take on the Tampa Bay Rays. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. and there will be no television broadcast of the game in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the WEEI listening area, you can listen to the game there as well. The audio is also available...

Red Sox-Twins Live: Boston’s Split-Squad Day Continues With Game Against Twins at JetBlue Park

5:53 p.m. ET: One game down, one to go. Half of the Red Sox — who are signed up for split-squad action on Friday — played the Orioles to a 3-3 tie in Sarasota earlier in the day. Now, it’s on to the Twins, who arrive at JetBlue Park for a 7:05 p.m. ET throwdown with the rest of Boston’s players. Felix Doubront will get the nod for the Sox. It’ll mark his third start of...

Jose Iglesias Has Golden Opportunity to Become Red Sox’ Opening Day Shortstop With Stephen Drew Sidelined

Jose Iglesias was essentially handed a blank check at the tail end of the 2012 season. Iglesias had every opportunity to solidify himself as the front-runner for Boston’s 2013 starting shortstop job, but he couldn’t cash in on the opportunity, and the Red Sox ultimately decided to sign veteran Stephen Drew. It looks like the 23-year-old still has the check, though, and he has...

David Ortiz to Join Jimmy Rollins, Andre Ethier as Animated Characters on ‘The Cleveland Show’ Sunday

David Ortiz may not have suited up for the Red Sox yet this season, but fans will get a chance to see him in action Sunday night — sort of. Big Papi will lend his voice to an animated doppelganger on Sunday night for an episode of The Cleveland Show. The episode, which airs on FOX at 8:30 p.m. EDT, also features voice cameos from Jimmy Rollins, Andre Ethier, Matt Kemp and Joey...
