St. Louis Cardinals announce the release of three minor league players

With recent movement throughout the St. Louis Cardinals farm system, a few players found their careers over with the organization. Releases like this happen in the regular season when the team feels like the player is not progressing enough and the player would like a fresh start with a new organization. On Thursday, the Cardinals announced the release of these three players: Vance...

Kelly goes on DL, leaving Cardinals with some intriguing options

After putting Joe Kelly on the disabled list Thursday, the Cardinals replaced him on the roster with a reliever. Hmm. So Carlos Martinez is moving into the rotation? Not necessarily. Kelly would not have been scheduled to start again until Monday, so the Cardinals still have time to weigh their options. Left-hander Tyler Lyons, who made eight starts last season, remains a leading...

Cardinals pitchers sing ‘Love is an Open Door’ duet from ‘Frozen’ (video)

As the parent of a nearly three-year-old girl, it’s suffice to say that I am all too familiar with the Disney smash “Frozen,” which has transcended traditional smash hit status and turned into an undeniable cultural phenomenon. The animated blockbuster now is the highest-grossing animated film of all-time, netting a whopping $1,112,629,935 worldwide and $399,529,935 […] The...

A couple of shortstop prospects homer in Friday night minor league action

The Baby Birds split the four games on the schedule for Friday night. Memphis loses in Nashville and Peoria loses in Fort Wayne. Springfield and Palm Beach were both home winners on Friday. It was a big night for shortstop prospects as Greg Garcia and Aledmys Diaz each homered. Garcia hit his fourth, which ties him for the organizational lead, and Diaz hit his second for Springfield...

Here's why Matt Carpenter's at-bats have been going much better than you think

At first glance, Matt Carpenter's quest to build on his breakout 2013 season doesn't appear to be off to a rousing start. He is hitting a so-so .275 with a less-than-robust .327 slugging percentage and, after setting all kinds of doubles records a year ago, hasn't had a single two-base hit in the Cardinals' first 15 games. His swing-and-miss rate is up, and his 13...

Martinez will remain in bullpen — for now

The Cardinals intend to use a minor-league pitcher to fill in next week for injured starter Joe Kelly and leave aspiring starter Carlos Martinez and the under-construction bullpen undisturbed. That plan could change if Kelly’s absence is longer than expected. “If we needed somebody for an extended period of time, it would make sense to give (Martinez) the ball,” manager Mike...

Cardinals' Jaime Garcia (shoulder) to throw bullpen Saturday

St. Louis Cardinals lefty starting pitcher Jaime Garcia acknowledged in spring training that his surgically repaired shoulder will never be what it was before, and he will have to learn to adjust, reported Derrick Gould of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Although a visit to Dr. James Andrews revealed no structural damage in the shoulder, he was held back in Florida to recover from...

Wainwright's complete-game shutout gives Cards yet another win over the Nats

The Nationals will beat the Cardinals again, maybe even this year. It just may not seem like that after the Cardinals' 8-0 victory Thursday night. The win was the Cardinals' eighth straight over Washington stretching back to their incredible comeback in Game 5 of the 2012 NLDS. If one team really can "get in the heads" of another, the Nationals must be seeing little...

Nats' bats useless against Waino in Cardinals' 8-0 victory

WASHINGTON -- Adam Wainwright threw a two-hitter Thursday night for his seventh career shutout, chipped in at the plate with a double and single, and St. Louis benefited from four errors by Washington in the Cardinals' 8-0 victory. Wainwright (3-1) allowed Ian Desmond's infield single in the second inning and Adam LaRoche's single to right in the ninth. He struck out...

Wainwright, Cardinals shut out bungling Nats

It wasn't until the ninth inning that Washington managed to get a base hit out of the infield against Adam Wainwright. It didn't matter. The Cardinals' ace raced through the Washington Nationals' lineup on a chilly night as his teammates feasted on the error-prone Nats for an 8-0 victory at Nationals Park. Wainwright pitched the fourth shutout of the 2014 season...

Nats 3, Cardinals 1

On the heels of an atrocious performance Thursday night, Matt Williams challenged his players to return to the park Friday with renewed focus and desire. The Nationals responded in kind, delivering the kind of well-played ballgame Williams had been seeking all along. Gio Gonzalez and Michael Wacha matched pitch-for-pitch, with Wacha allowing only Anthony Rendon’s solo homer in...

Cardinals' Joe Kelly (hamstring) will miss at least one start

The St. Louis Cardinals (9-6) will continue their eleven-game road trip in Washington and New York without starting pitcher Joe Kelly. Kelly left last night's game against the Milwaukee Brewers in the fourth inning, pointing to his leg and signalling for a trainer after he was out in a close play at first. He is likely to miss at least one start with a strained hamstring, according...
