Hall of Famer and former Philadelphia Phillies pithcer Steve Carlton was one of the most dominant pitchers of his era, and of all-time. He captured 4 Cy Young awards, while winning 329 games over 24 MLB seasons. Carlton also retired only second to Nolan Ryan in career strikeouts, and now stands fourth all-time on that list. Ryan finished his career with 5 fewer wins in three addtional seasons of play, something that hasn’t escaped Carlton. While speaking with 94WIP in Philadelphia, Carlton took a shot at his contemporary in an interview: Steve Carlton on 94WIP, reflecting on his rivalry with Nolan Ryan: “I was more interested in wins. Nolan was more interested in strikeouts.” — Glen Macnow (@RealGlenMacnow) May 14, 2013 BURN! For what it is worth, there are many who believe that Ryan was obsessed with strikeouts and his no-hitters. Ryan would rather allow a walk, than allow a batter to get the bat on the ball.
