Steve Pearce started last season in Indianapolis, hitting safely in 21 of his first 23 games before joining the Pirates on May 4. He played well and was feeling good according to Colin Dunlap, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
"Things were going good. I was feeling good at that point." said Pearce. Then on May 14, Pearce felt soreness in his left knee and 10 days later was put on the 15-day disabled list, after rolling his right ankle.
He spent the remainder of the season serving out a minor league rehab and with the offseason signing of Lyle Overbay, he realizes he will need to work hard just to make the major league club.
"I,m going to try my hardest to make this squad somewhere -- outfield, infield, backup off the bench, it doesn't matter, just somewhere on this squad," Pearce said. " I want to be with this team and I want to help us win."
