The Pittsburgh Pirates opened their Spring Training exhibition schedule with a seven-inning match against Manatee-Sarasota College in Florida today.
The result ended up resembling what you’d expect when a Major League organization takes on a community college. The Bucs won 21-1.
While the Pirates’ lineup didn’t resemble anything near what it will on Opening Day 2011, a few of the players participating in the game are vying for a shot at making the big club out of Spring Training.
The most notable of those players turned in the most notable performance of the game.
Steve Pearce recorded two doubles in two at bats, and brought in four RBI. He also walked once.
Pearce will be looking to stick with the Pirates once Spring Training ends by proving his value to the team. He played first base today, but can also play third. If Pearce turns in a strong Spring, look for him to become the team’s top utility infielder come May.
The Pirates will take on the Tampa Bay Ray...
