Washington Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg said he's feeling much better one day after lasting just three innings in the record-setting Atlanta heat. Thanks to a good night's sleep at the team hotel, Strasburg looked rested and relaxed in the clubhouse on Sunday morning. ''Yeah, as soon as I got back, I just hit the mattress and passed out,'' he said with a smile. Strasburg had little reason to smile Saturday, when the National Weather Service reported that the city of Atlanta was broiling at an all-time high of 106 degrees. Strasburg couldn't return to pitch the fourth inning against the Braves, and Washington manager Davey Johnson noted he was pale, dizzy and barely responding to questions from pitching coach Steve McCatty. Johnson later was told that severe dehydration led to three intravenous fluid treaments for his young right-hander. Strasburg spoke before Sunday's game with Nationals starter Gio Gonalez and warned his teammate to be careful with the conditions. The game-time temperature was 101. ''Obviously you want to try and hydrate as much as you can,'' Strasburg said. ''Hopefully it's not as hot as it was yesterday, but it's something that you're just going to have to try and deal with. At the same time, you have to be smart and listen to your body and if it doesn't feel right, you have to take every precaution.'' Saturday marked just the second time in Strasburg's 33 starts that the he lost consecutive outings. The three-inning performance also tied for the shortest of his career. Strasburg, who began the day leading the majors with 122 strikeouts, will try to win his 10th game Friday at home against Colorado.

Heat causes Strasburg to exit after 3 innings

Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg left his start Saturday after just three innings because of heat-related issues. Laboring in 104-degree conditions, Strasburg didn't return to begin the fourth against Atlanta, tying for the shortest outing of his 33-start career. Chien-Ming Wang replaced Strasburg, who allowed two hits, three runs and four walks. Making 36 of...

Nationals' Strasburg falls apart in Atlanta heat

It seemed the kind of day that would set up well for Stephen Strasburg. He'd already defeated the Atlanta Braves twice this year. He'd already won at Turner Field. He'd already won a head-to-head matchup with Braves starter Mike Minor. And even if he wasn't at his best, surely his teammates would score plenty of runs against Minor, who entered with a 6.14 ERA, more...

Bryce Harper still could make it to first All-Star Game

Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez, and Ian Desmond are All-Stars. Bryce Harper could be too. Go here to vote for Harper in the NL Final Vote early and often. And don't listen to Harper, who is apparently voting Chipper Jones: "I think a Hall of Famer should be able to go to the All-Star Game his last year. If I was going to make a vote, I'd go vote for...

2012 Uniform Change: Washington Nationals Become the 1924 Senators

The Nationals will be turning back the clocks next week as they honor the 1924 Washington Senators, according to this article in the Washington Post. Like all of the throwbacks this year, the uniforms look quite good: If I was a Nationals fan, I would purchase this uniform. I know the fan base, living in DC for 4 years, is obsessed with the curly “w”, but I have always found...

Braves win, Strasburg succumbs to 106-degree heat

On Atlanta's hottest day on record, Mike Minor did enough to cool off Stephen Strasburg and the Washington Nationals. ''He did, under tough conditions,'' Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. ''I think we took a step forward with him today. He competed his butt off today.'' Mike Minor won for just the second time in 12 starts and Atlanta overcame...

Was Craig Stammen An All-Star Snub?

For the last two seasons, the Nationals’ bullpen has become synonymous with one unimportant but very remarkable thing; All Star game wins.  Starting in 2010 when Matt Capps recorded the final out of the 6th inning by striking out David Ortiz, to Tyler Clippard’s one out in the bottom of the 3rd inning in 2011, Nationals’ relievers have been the winning pitcher in consecutive...

Evaluating The Nationals Trade Options

The month of July is almost upon us, and baseball is about to get a little more interesting. For the most part the buyers have separated themselves from the sellers, and for the first time since 2005 the Washington Nationals are in the position of a buyer. As far as the nature of July guys there are going to be lots of rumors floating around and some of them will have the Nationals...
