It was not a very good week for the White Sox.  Their first road trip of the year started out with a five game losing streak before the Sox were able to break through and get a win on Sunday against the Indians.  Let’s take a look at those who helped contribute to the five game skid, and those that played well in spite of it. Streaking Conor Gillaspie After a couple nice games at the end of the homestand, Gillaspie found himself a regular starter this week after the injury to Gordon Beckham.  In addition to playing a solid third base, Gillaspie has been more than solid at the plate.  He is hitting .444 on the season (12-for-27) with five multi-hit games, including four this past week.  He’s got two doubles and a triple but his still looking for his first RBI.  It is good to see Gilliaspie stepping into the everyday lineup and contributing. With the injuries to Beckham and Angel Sanchez, Gillaspie is likely to play just about every day.  He also adds another left handed bat into the Sox righty heavy lineup. Jeff Keppinger After a 1-for-21 homestand he would like to forget, Keppinger seems to have rediscovered his swing on the road.  He is hitting .346 (9-for-26) in his last six games with four multi-hit games in that stretch.  He has also scored four runs in those six games. Much like Gillaspie, Keppinger will see a lot of action at different spots with Beckham on the DL.  His versatility in the field will keep him in the lineup as long as he continues to hit.  This past week he has hit more like the guy in Spring Training than the guy we saw in Chicago to start the season. Paul Konerko The Captain also got off to a slow start at home going 2-for-20 and taking a .100 batting average into the road trip.  However he too seems to be coming around this past week.  He hit .333 (7-for-21) with 2 home runs, a double and 7 RBI this past week and his two run homer on Sunday helped the Sox snap their five game losing streak. He has a hit in every game on the trip and it’s good to see him turning on pitches as well as taking balls the other way when that’s all the pitcher is giving him.  It looks like we can stop worrying about Konerko being “done,” at least for another week. Slumping Tyler Flowers Oh Tyler, Tyler, Tyler.  We were all so excited when you got off to a good start, and tried to give you the benefit of the doubt after a couple three strikeout games, but it’s getting tougher and tougher to defend you.  Flowers finally snapped an 0-for-22 streak on Sunday with a double (right after he swung through a hit and run resulting in Gillaspie being thrown out at second). The numbers overall are not good.  Flowers has one hit in his last 21 at bats and has struck out 10 times in that stretch.  He is now hitting .182 on the season with 15 strikeouts in 33 at bats.   Dayan Viciedo After hitting the walk off homer last Sunday to finish off the Sox 4-2 homestand, the Tank has gone exactly there, into the Tank.  He sat out the final two games in Washington, so he only had 15 at bats this week, but he only picked up one hit and is without a hit in his last 12 at bats. He also has 6 strikeouts this week in those 15 at bats.  He is now hitting .118 on the season with 13 strikeouts in 34 at bats.  Adam Dunn The Big Donkey is off to a slow start as well.  He is hitting just .136 on the season after a 1-for-20 week. He struck out 6 times this week as well bringing his season total to 15 K’s in 44 at bats.  The most concerning part about this is that he has drawn just 2 walks on the year, although he did draw a two out walk in front of Konerko’s go-ahead homer on Sunday. Dunn has struggled in the clean-up to make contact when needed and has also left quite a few runners on base.  If he does not start driving in more runs, the White Sox might want to think about flip-flopping him with Konerko.
