Here are some starting pitchers that can help you out with a spot start.

Barry Zito - I know, I know, it’s not 2005. But Barry Zito is 5-2 with a 2.98 ERA and a WHIP of 1.25. He may not be striking many people out (39 in 66.1 innings) but he’s giving quality starts on a regular basis and when it comes to a one day streamer – that’s what you’re looking for. Just try not to think about the fact that it’s Barry Zito and you should be fine for a day.

Tommy Milone – I’ve written about Milone a couple times and he’s done nothing but make me look like I know what I’m talking about. He’s given up more than two runs only once in his last five starts and if the A’s would actually score some runs he might be able to pick up a win one of these days.

Nate Eovaldi – Ted Lilly’s replacement hasn’t had much luck since he’s been called up, but that’s not because he hasn’t been pitching well. Time is most likely up for Eovaldi, with Lilly returning from the DL on Saturday, so take advantage of the way he’s been throwing the ball while you still can.

Edinson Volquez – It seems like everybody on the list – except for Barry Zito – has come across hard luck this year when it comes to run support. Volquez is no different, which would explain why he’s 2-5 even though his ERA is only 3.42. He does walk a lot of people, but eventually he has to get a win, right?

Travis Wood – He’s made four starts for the Cubs, three of those have been good – including his last one which was great – and one of them was awful. You’d be buying in on him building off of his last start. However, I’d still make sure the rest of the guys on this list were gone before I settled on Mr. Wood here.
