Brewers manager Ron Roenicke waited long enough for slumping second baseman Rickie Weeks to get on track and couldn't wait any longer.

Roenicke finally made the move Friday that he had avoided for so long, dropping Weeks from second in the batting order to sixth. A few weeks earlier, Roenicke had moved Weeks from leadoff to the two-hole.

At the time of the switch, Weeks was batting a mere .156 with a league-leading 49 strikeouts. As always, Roenicke discussed the move with the player beforehand.

"I talked to Rick today; we've been talking as a staff about it for a couple of days," said Roenicke. "I think it was the right time to do it."

Moving Weeks touched off a succession of other moves. Right fielder Corey Hart went from fifth to the leadoff spot; center fielder Norichika Aoki batted second in place of Weeks; and catcher Jonathan Lucroy moved up to the fifth spot vacated by Hart.

Roenicke made it clear that he wasn't making Weeks a scapegoat for an underachieving offense that scored three runs while losing both games of a two-game series in Houston the previous two days.

"You guys know he's a team player," said Roenicke. "He's very professional in what he does. I think he realizes even though he's got a lot of pride and he knows he's going to hit, he was OK with me doing it.

"This is not Rickie's fault, what we're doing offensively. It's the whole group. Offensively, we're not good as a group."
