The Reds rolled past the Pirates in a total snooze-fest today to take the series against the Bucs.

Charlie Morton ‘s dominance over the Reds unfortunately came to an abrupt end this afternoon. Cincinnati picked up an unearned run in the first following a pickoff throw that got away, but they hit the ball very well off Charlie in the next few innings. Todd Frazier and Drew Stubbs–both righties–took him deep, and Morton was having trouble getting the Reds to put the ball on the ground (he induced 5 groundouts and 7 flyouts). Charlie was able to salvage the outing a bit and make it through six innings, but he wasn’t sharp at all and the Reds beat him up.

The Pirates had a big chance off the struggling Mat Latos in the first inning. Latos hit Jose Tabata to lead off the game, then walked two in a row after recording an out. Casey McGehee smoked a ball down the line at third, but Frazier made a diving stop. Then Nate McLouth was rung up on a close pitch, stranding the bases loaded.

Latos settled in after escaping that threat. The Pirates only managed two singles against him over six innings, and he struck out a career-high 11. The offense as a whole was back in sleep-walk mode…the Pirates struck out a total of SEVENTEEN times on the day. After the Bucs missed their chance in the first and the Reds were able to add on shortly after, they cruised the rest of the way for a boring/easy win.

Reds 5, Pirates 0 / Box / 2012 Record: 12-16 / Next: Tuesday, vs. Nationals, 7:05

MVP: Alvarez (+.068) / LVP: Morton (-.293) / Key play: Stubbs’ HR
