What a weekend!  The last 72 hours for Mets fans has been so surreal, I’m still wondering if it all really happened.  The defending World Champion St. Louis Cardinals have been held to 1 run…ONE!  all series so far, Johan pitched the first Mets no-hitter in history (still trying to process that one), and R.A. Dickey said “I’ll see your no-hitter and raise you another shut-out” the next day, and the Mets all-time saves leader, John Franco, went into the Mets Hall of Fame.  To top it off, the Mets are now in a three-way tie for 1st place in the NL East!  WOW!

This afternoon at 1:10 pm EST (weather permitting), the Mets and Cardinals play the final game of a 4-game series that the Mets have already won (which feels great to us and probably even greater to them).  The game can be seen on SNY, heard on WFAN660AM and followed on Twitter @MetsWFAN. @dailystache and @Meriwyn.  Although sadly I’m at work today and can’t watch the game so you’ll get little to no tweeting from me LOL.

Dillon Gee sure has a heck of a weekend to live up to.  Santana’s no-hitter, Dickey’s shut-out and Niese’s 10-strikeout domination have set the bar pretty high for the series finale.  Rookie Jeremy Hefner was originally slated to start today, but Collins made the switch to save Hefner in case Johan needs more rest after his 134-pitch outing on Friday night.  Also, more help is on the way as Chris Young makes his return to the Mets’ rotation tomorrow night in Washington.  Miguel Batista also comes off the DL on Tuesday and will serve as bullpen backup for Young should he need to exit early.

Mets Lineup
1. Kirk Nieuwenhuis, LF
2. Andres Torres, CF
3. David Wright, 3B
4. Lucas Duda, RF
5. Daniel Murphy, 2B
6. Ike Davis, 1B
7. Omar Quintanilla, SS
8. Mike Nickeas, C
9. Dillon Gee, SP

Cardinals Lineup
1. Rafael Furcal, SS
2. Carlos Beltran, RF
3. Matt Holliday, LF
4. Yadier Molina, C
5. Allen Craig, 1B
6. David Freese, 3B
7. Daniel Descalso, 2B
8. Adron Chambers, CF
9. Kyle Lohse, SP

Pitching Matchup

NYM: Dillon Gee (4-3, 4.69 ERA).  Gee has been steadily improving and has his 3rd straight quality start last week against the Phillies, where he pitched 6.2 innings and allowed only 2 runs.

STL:  Kyle Lohse (5-1, 3.36 ERA). Lohse has had some rough outings as of late, and has not gone past 6 innings in 4 of his last 6 starts.  Sloppy defense from the Cardinals hasn’t helped his case.

Stache Keys to the Game(s)

  • The high from the weekend is bound to wear off…don’t get discouraged or lose focus
  • Keep the rally going, Dillon Gee!
  • I don’t really have anymore advice except keep doing what you’re doing!

June 4th in Mets History

Happy Birthday Phil Linz (1939) and Rick Wilkins (1967))!  The transactions for this date are too numerous to list as, just like today, it was the first day of the MLB Draft.

Dickey Dominates Cardinals In 5-0 Complete Game Gem

How do you follow a no-hitter? With the next best thing – a complete game shutout by R.A. Dickey. Summary Oh man, is it good to be a Mets fan right now or what? Dickey had one hell of a task this afternoon – he had to follow the single best pitching performance in Mets history against a pretty good Cardinal team led by our ex-CFer, Carlos Beltran. He jokingly said in the post...

Post Game: Mets 5 Cardinals 0

The Mets defeated the Cardinals by a score of 5-0 this afternoon at clinch a series split at worst. RA Dickey followed up Johan Santana’s no hitter nicely by pitching a complete game, 7 hit shutout of his own. Like his previous two starts, Dickey’s knuckle ball was dancing today, as he recorded 9 strikeouts. Additionally, Dickey was in complete control, throwing 73 percent of...

Dickey’s dominance leading to Cy Young chatter

It seems to be way too early to start talking about the Cy Young race, even for New York Mets fans who have watched their top two starters dominate a formidable St. Louis Cardinals line-up to the tune of back-to-back complete game shutouts.  The Cards ranked first in the NL in runs scored heading into Friday night’s action, but then they ran into one of the best 1-2 punches in...

Cards shut down by Dickey, Mets

NEW YORK (AP) -- R.A. Dickey followed up Johan Santana's no-hitter by shutting out St. Louis, David Wright homered and the New York Mets beat the Cardinals 5-0 on Saturday. Dickey (8-1) gave up seven hits, struck out nine and walked none in his third career shutout -- first this season. The Mets scored three runs in the second, on a mishandled grounder and two run-scoring groundouts...

Dickey tosses 7-hitter at Cardinals

A day after Johan Santana made Mets history, R.A. Dickey baffled the St. Louis Cardinals in his own way. The knuckleballer followed up Santana's no-hitter by shutting out St. Louis, David Wright homered and the New York Mets beat the Cardinals 5-0 on Saturday. ''It's no easy chore to follow Johan,'' Dickey said, ''I went to bed reminding myself to...

Cards vs Mets Lineup/Preview: What Will R.A. Dickey Do For An Encore!

Starting Lineup Kirk Nieuwenhuis, lf Andres Torres, cf David Wright, 3b Lucas Duda, rf Daniel Murphy, 2b Ike Davis, 1b Omar Quintanilla, ss Josh Thole, c R.A. Dickey, rhp Johan Santana and the Mets made history last night. Honestly, since the last out of last night’s game thinking of baseball has been surreal. Mets Fight Back, But Cards Take Final Game 5-4

Today the Mets got another quality start, along with some timely long balls, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Cardinals today as they fell 5-4 in the series finale this afternoon in the Citi. The Mets fought hard today, but made a few costly errors (only one of which counted as an error) that would ultimately prove to be the downfall in today’s game.  Dillon Gee pitched well...

Pre-Game: St. Louis Cardinals (27-26) @ New York Mets (30-23)

OK Jon Niese, it’s your turn again.  For the 2nd straight start, Jon Niese (3-2 4.55 ERA) will be following consecutive complete game shutouts by Johan Santana and R.A. Dickey.  Dickey followed up Santana’s no-hitter by tossing a pedestrian 7-hit complete game shutout yesterday to put the Mets a season high 7 games over .500.  Jake Westbrook (4-4 3.84 ERA) will have the...

3 Up & 3 Down: All About The Pitching Edition

The New York Mets wind up taking 3 of the 4 games against the St. Louis Cardinals, losing the finale on Monday afternoon. Since I work fulltime, it’s very hard for me to catch weekday games, but it’s really of no consequence, because this edition of 3&3 is all about some great weekend pitching by the Mets. 3 Up: Oh, What A Night: Friday night Johan Santana made Mets history...
