The speculation centered on the Cubs making a lineup change involving shortstop Starlin Castro. Manager Dale Sveum made that change Friday night, but it was not the one that was the center of the speculation.

In the 1-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates -- the Cubs' 10th straight defeat -- Castro moved up in the batting order from the No. 3 spot to second. There had been talk the Cubs would move Castro to the leadoff spot, where he enjoyed most of his success last year.

Instead, Sveum left right fielder David DeJesus in the leadoff spot, where he has done a good job this year. Castro had not performed poorly batting third; he entered the game with a hitting line of .313/.323/.413 with two homers and 25 RBI. But the Cubs were looking for some kind of spark, any kind of spark.

"It's time," Sveum said. "Like I told Castro, 'It's not a demotion, it's more shaking the team up.' He was great about it. He was like, 'Hey, I just want to win, I don't care where I hit in the lineup.' He took it well and completely understood."

Castro went 2-for-5. Utility man Joe Mather batted third and played center field, going 2-for-4.

"There's nothing he's done to be put down in the two-spot," Sveum said of Castro. "It's more change to get everything going."

As far as the Cubs' overall 10-game losing streak goes, Sveum wasn't sure what to say.

"I'm a little lost for words now," he said. "It's kind of the same thing. But guys are battling, having decent, good at-bats, just not finalizing it, really. A lot of good at-bats, just not getting it done."
