Fan Appreciation Day probably could have gone a little smoother at Angel Stadium on Sunday. A massive swarm of bees took over right field during the Angels-Mariners game in the third inning. The takeover resulted in a 23-minute delay with the teams retreating to safety in their dugouts. John Potom, a fan turned local hero who works at a beehive removal company, lended a hand along with some brave grounds crew members. Equipped with a Gatorade bucket, a broom and some sort of repellent, Potom was able to get the situation under control, according to MLB.com’s Greg Johns. Play was once again delayed in the fourth inning when Mike Trout began swatting at more bees, but the second stoppage was a brief one as the grounds crew released some sort of smoking device in right field to combat the problem.
