From cubs.com: The Cubs are expected to call up outfielder Ryan Sweeney from Triple-A Iowa and option Dave Sappelt to the Minor Leagues on Monday. This is an interesting move. On one hand, Sweeney is almost certainly the better baseball player at this point. Sappelt just hasn't really made an impact at the major league level, for one reason or another. Additionally, this allows Sappelt to play every day, which might actually help him in the long run (I care less about Sweeney playing every day; his development is just about over). The interesting wrinkle, though, is that Sweeney and DeJesus are both left-handed (Sappelt is a rightie). Sveum has aggressively platoon players this season and it's worked well for DeJesus hiding from lefties. That's no longer on option (though Sappelt was floundering against lefties worse than DeJesus likely would've). The upshot is that DeJesus will probably see a significantly higher number of left-handers than he was before, and slight...

Chicago Cubs Purchase Contract Of Outfielder Ryan Sweeney

The Chicago Cubs have purchased the contract of outfielder Ryan Sweeney from their Triple-A Iowa minor league affiliate. While he won’t play a major role in the majors, he is a career .280 major league hitter. To make room for him the Cubs designated right-handed pitcher Kameron Loe for assignment. He will have to clear waivers if Chicago wants a shot at retaining his services...

The Cubs have added outfielder Ryan Sweeney and reliever Rafael Dolis from Triple-A before their game against the Texas Rangers. To make room for them Monday, Chicago designated reliever Kameron Loe for assignment and optioned outfielder Dave Sappelt to its affiliate in Iowa. The 28-year-old Sweeney has spent time in the majors with the White Sox, Red Sox and Athletics. In 23 games...

Breaking News: I-Cubs Get to Play!

Just by taking the field today the Iowa Cubs snapped their three-game skid at the hands of Mother Nature. Then they proceeded to hand Oklahoma City its first loss in a week by whipping the Redhawks 5-2 in the first game of a twinbill at Principal Park with a little help from rehabbing Kyuji Fujikawa. Cubs rumors: Scott Feldman likely trade candidate

With the summer trade deadline on the horizon, one arm to keep an eye on is Chicago Cubs right-handed starting pitcher Scott Feldman, according to Buster Olney of ESPN. With the Cubs clearly still rebuilding, Feldman is likely to become a trade chip if his impressive start continues. The Cubs signed several veteran arms -- including Feldman, Edwin Jackson and Scott Baker -...

The Sad Case of Dale Sveum

After Saturday’s loss, Chicago Cub fans have completely given up on Carlos Marmol, and manager Dale Sveum has been thrown into the fire right along with him. Fans are getting tired of seeing Marmol trotted out to the mound game after game, only to see him give fans heart attacks, and finding a way to grab defeat from the jaws of victory. They want Marmol gone from the team, and...

Cubs’ Garza and Fujikawa Having Successful Rehab Assignments

Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matt Garza and reliever Kyuji Fujikawa are both inching closer to returning to the big club. Both have been successful in their Minor League rehab assignments, and neither has reported any issues concerning their injuries that put them on the disabled list. For Garza, the Number 1 concern is getting both his pitch count and velocity up without...

Rockies Arms Keep Cub Bats Quiet at Talking Stick

Matthew Carasiti threw five shutout innings and combined with three relievers to throw a four-hitter, and Raimel Tapia and Dillon Thomas drilled RBI singles, as the Rockies edged the Cubs 2-1 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Dust Storm Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick Resort, east of Scottsdale, AZ.  Jeffrey Baez belted a solo HR to account...

The Legacy of Kerry Wood

Today is May 6th, 2013, 15 years to the day that something very special happened at Wrigley Field.  In 1998, the Cubs made it to the playoffs as the National League wild card after a nine-year absence and when Sammy Sosa was going bonkers and helping North Siders and America love baseball again.  But on May 6th, 1998, before Sammy’s power surge kicked in, a young pitcher making...

Minor League Report: April 30-May 6th, 2013

The Cubs are on their way to improving their record to a slightly-less bad but still very bad 12-20, a winning percentage of 0.375.  Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo have been producing as of late, including fine performances on Monday in which Castro found a way to get on base four times and Rizzo clubbed two doubles and hit a home run as of the 8th inning. Iowa Cubs - Josh Vitters...

Tom Ricketts Goes to Lunch

Cubs fan and friend of WSD Anthony Boylan wrote a press release for the Lakeview Chamber of Commerce today and wanted to share it with us so we could share it with you: Tom Ricketts laid out his vision for the Cubs Tuesday saying the plan aims to rack up wins for the team and the fans, as well as for the city and the neighborhood. “Wrigley is a beautiful park, but it comes with...

#TeaseRallies are unsatisfying

The Cubs dropped thier third straight game yesterday. Two of the past three games where lost due to 4 run eighth inning. The bullpen has been the source of great frustration for the second straight start of a season, and I really don’t want to dwell on the obvious of Cubs need better relievers. Instead I want to talk about the #TeaseRally on Friday. The Cubs were down four and...

If we are judging by their names, that is. (Smaykin Gonzalez? Pfft, no...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 5-7-13

Also known as *************** 2013! Iowa Cubs 0 @ Colorado Springs 5 This was bad. Dave Sappelt went 1-3 with a strikeout. It was the best offensive performance on the team. Interestingly, Logan Watkins played SS. He got on via FC (0-4) and stole a base. Only Luis Flores, Nick Struck, and Edwin Maysonet reached base otherwise; everyone else went 0-fer. As a team, the Iowa Cubs...
