Some New Yorkers (particularly their sports fans) tend to think of themselves as knowlegdeable, tough, and just plain smarter than everyone. Well that might be true. After all, we are talking about the Big Apple, where, "if you can make it there you can make it anywhere". But for all the accolades and praise that such individuals like to heap upon themselves, I'll never understand their shortsightedness and ability to miss the big picture, especially when it means looking past themselves. I guess it should be of little surprise then that, given the general attitudes and or demeanor of the people that dwell there, the major news outlets would share the same sentiments and traits. Why else would the major newspapers in New York bypass the opportunity to embrace an All Star Game that actually carries some weight? Why would you focus on the importance of winning this game and home field advantage? Why talk about and the fact that the World Series matchups could potentially be your hated rival Boston Red Sox or the fact that the Cubs could win their first championship since 1908? Why make the major story about this being the last All Star Game in Yankee Stadium? Hey, if those topics were too boring you even have a reformed drug addict in the All Star Game with the potential of winning a triple crown. Oh, but let's focus on Papelbon saying he'd pick himself to close the All Star Game ahead of Mariano Rivera. Not Game 7 of the World Series, but the All Star Game. I don't know if their fans and media aren't aware, but athletes (yes even the Red Sox) are highly competitive and extremely cocky?especially when they're better than you are (And better run organizationally, and no I'm not a Sox fan?check my profile). But why care about anything else when people are looking at you, and disparaging your precious Yankee team? I'm just glad that the Yanks are moving to another stadium so that they're fans, and media personalities will see that there is life outside of the house that Ruth built.
