Keith Allison, Flickr Each Monday, good or bad, we’ll look back at the biggest theme of the week that was for the Detroit Tigers. After winning the triple crown and MVP in 2012, many wondered what Miguel Cabrera would do for an encore. Even though there’s no doubting his talent, Cabrera certainly couldn’t put himself in position for a repeat performance of greatness, could he? The possibility for superhuman behavior always exists for Cabrera, who powered Detroit’s 7-1 week with plenty of clutch hits and monster home runs. This year, a bit of a slower start than usual helped fuel the notion that Cabrera couldn’t keep pace with himself, but last week, he proved that might not even be out of the realm of possibility. Things began with a game sealing, opposite field home run against the Atlanta Braves last Sunday night, and never slowed down the rest of the week. That was followed up quickly by a 1-4 night on Tuesday with another monster home run. Cabrera sprinkled in a few runs and RBI’s the rest of the week before busting out on Saturday night with a huge 4-4, 2 home run and 6 RBI effort. All in all, Cabrera’s impressive statistical line for the week read like this: 13-30, 9 runs, 4 home runs, 13 RBI. While Cabrera was feasting on some subpar competition with Minnesota and Houston, he still had to hit the pitches and have the statistical week he did. Lost in the shuffle? The fact that Cabrera also played some fantastic defense at third base. There’s nothing Cabrera can’t do, including outdoing himself. Consider this: after the first game of the season, Cabrera didn’t have a hit, home run, RBI or run scored. Through the first seven games, Cabrera was only hitting .304 with no home runs, seven hits and six RBI’s. Since then, with weeks like last week, Cabrera has managed to grab the highest batting average in the American League while leading the league in RBI’s. He’s only three off the pace for the league lead in home runs, as well. Few other hitters in baseball are capable of such a consistently robust statistical week regardless of the competition, which will make Cabrera a threat to break his own records for the foreseeable future.
