The Tampa Bay Rays have a gem of a left-hander in Matt Moore. He had an excellent season in 2013 and looked poised to be one of the top starters in the American League this season. Unfortunately, Moore will be missing the rest of the year thanks to Tommy John surgery. Moore tested out his gimpy left elbow on Monday throwing a bit, but the soreness in his arm persisted. He has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament and will reportedly undergo surgery next week. The 24-year-old could have tried rest and rehab as a cure, but that almost never works, so this is probably the smart decision. Moore broke into the big leagues full-time in 2012, and posted an 11-11 record, with a 3.81 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. He also had 175 strikeouts in 177.1 innings. Last season he was even better, finishing with a 17-4 record, with a 3.29 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. He made 27 starts and struck out 143 in 150.1 innings. He made two starts to open this season, but only threw 10 innings and was 0-2. Unfortunately for the Rays they will be without Moore for the rest of the season, and he likely won’t be ready for the start of the 2015 season either. That’s the nature of the recovery timetable for Tommy John surgery. But it’s better for Moore to just get the surgery over with now so he can get back as soon as possible.
