The Tampa Bay Rays opened the 2012 regular season in the same fashion they finished the 2011 regular season-with a dramatic victory over the New York Yankees. Last season, the Rays defeated the Yankees with a walk-off home run by 3B Evan Longoria. On Friday, Tampa Bay defeated the Yankees with their last as bat as well despite the ramifications of the game being far less important. The games final hit was delivered by 1B Carlos Pena, a bases loaded single off Yankees reliever Mariano Rivera. Pena returned to the Rays this season after playing for a one-year contract last season with the Chicago Cubs. Pena’s return to the Rays lineup was felt immediately as Pena went 3 for 5 Friday including a grand slam home run with his first at bat of the season. On the surface, one would have expected a pitcher’s duel with the two teams sending their aces to the mound, but both starting pitchers struggled. Yankess SP C.C. Sabathia lasted six innings but surrendered five earned runs a...

Pena, who spent four of his best seasons with the Rays before playing...

Rivera (0-1) had been 60 of 61 in save chances against the Rays. But after Desmond Jennings opened the ninth with a single against baseball's career...

Opening Day For The Yankees: One Disastrous Thing

A lot of bad things happened during the Yankees Opening Day loss to the Rays yesterday, but only one thing really stood out for me as being disastrous. It wasn't all the men left on base: 12 in total, with the bases left loaded in the 4th and 7th inning and being 2-11 with RISP. That's bad but, they did score 6 runs so I wouldn't call it disastrous. It wasn't Mariano...

Girardi on Why He Overmanaged Yesterday's 1st Inning

From Chad Jennings:Girardi said intentionally loading the bases in the first inning was because of the matchup and because of the opposing starter. CC Sabathia had great numbers against Carlos Pena, and Girardi expected a low-scoring game against James Shields. “Sean Rodriguez has hit (Sabathia) hard,” Girardi explained. “And it’s not something I’ll do a lot in the first...

The Tampa Bay Rays (1-0) beat the New York Yankees (0-1) 7-6, today at Tropicana Field. He went 6 innings, gave up 5 runs (2 HR's) and struck out 7 batters. Rafael Soriano and David Robertson both combined 2 scorless innings and 4 strikeouts...

Tampa Bay Rays hang on to defeat New York Yankees

This offseason, finding players which would add offensive firepower to the Tampa Bay Rays lineup was a priority. After two games, so far so good. The Tampa Bay Rays added DH Luke Scott to the lineup as well as bringing back 1B Carlos Pena. In the first two games of the season, the duo have combined to drive in nine runs. For the second straight day, the Tampa Bay Rays...

Click on photo to read more about the Eastern Conference #1 Seed I’m not sure the Rangers’ offense is going to hold up throughout the entire playoffs.
