However, in the end, it was just a grand slam in the seventh inning of an already out-of-hand 12-4 game. It wasn't enough to overcome two great home runs across the country. Scott Van Slyke, son of former major leaguer Andy Van Slyke, gets the top honor, but it's mostly because the other trot was already the slowest of the day. Van Slyke's three-run home run came as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the seventh inning with his team down two. The home run was the first of Van Slyke's career and put the team ahead for good in the Sunday night game of the week. ...

Lessons learned on fly paying off for Lucroy

MILWAUKEE It was May 21, 2010 a little over two years ago now that Jonathan Lucroy crouched behind the plate at Target Field in Minneapolis, completely and utterly overwhelmed. The young Brewers catcher wasn't supposed to be in the major leagues already. He had played just 21 games at the Triple-A level, but injuries and departures had blazed the path for his extraordinarily...

GIFcap: Scott Van Slyke gets the green light, wins the game with a homer

Rescuing the Dodgers from what seemed liked sure defeat against the Cardinals, rookie Scott Van Slyke launched a three-run bomb to left-center field on a 3-0 count. Give credit to Don Mattingly for pinch hitting Van Slyke against the lefty over going with the veteran in Adam Kennedy, and also for giving him the green

GIFcap: Scott Van Slyke Gets A Pie From Matt Kemp, Looks Like Michael Myers

After Scott Van Slyke played hero in yesterday’s game, he got a pie in the face from the always enthusiastic Matt Kemp. While that was hilarious, the aftermath was a thing that horror movies are made out of, as Van Slyke ended up looking like a combination of Michael Myers, The Joker, and Beetlejuice. They

Los Angeles Dodgers rollercoaster season continues

Talk about taking the bad with the good. The Dodgers completed a sweep of a three-game series against the World Champion Cardinals Sunday night only to get more bad news along two fronts. Rookie Scott Van Slyke (right) was the unexpected hero Sunday night when he hit a pinch-hit, three run home run that turned a 5-3 Dodgers deficit into a 6-5 win. First, second baseman Mark Ellis...

Dodger Kids Come Through with Series Sweep Against the Cards

Despite an up and down pitching performance by Chad Billingsley (mostly down), the Dodgers managed to squeak by the Cardinals io6-5 in the Sunday evening nightcap on ESPN in thrilling fashion. The big moment in the game came in the bottom of the seventh, when 25 year-old rookie outfielder Scott Van Slyke powered a three run home run to left field to give the Dodgers a 6-5 lead. The...

Cards remain in first despite dismal road swing

The only good thing about the Cardinals' 1-4 trip is they returned home still in first place in the National League Central Division, albeit only a half game ahead of Cincinnati. The 1-4 trip followed a 1-4 homestand, giving the Cardinals eight losses in their last 10 games. In three of their four losses on the trip to San Francisco and Los Angeles, they scored five runs, which...
