Left-hander Everett Teaford was recalled from Class AAA Omaha by the Kansas City Royals and pumped for a Sunday start against the Diamondbacks.

It never happened. Teaford went on the disabled list Saturday with a lower abdominal strain.

Neither Teaford nor the Royals know how the injury occurred.

"It's just over the course of the day," he said. "There's nothing really that set it off. And when I went to run, that's when it really flared up.

"It looks like it is nothing but a strain of the lower abdominal muscle. Hopefully, it will be pretty quick and I'll be right back at it. I'm definitely disappointed to not be able to start Sunday.

"I've never been hurt ever. I never missed a start, an inning. I've never missed anything. I'll have to take a few days off and get it going again."

Manager Ned Yost does not know what occurred to cause Teaford's injury.

"When you find out, you tell me, because we don't know," Yost said. "Nobody knows how it happened. He went to run and couldn't run. We don't have any idea when it happened or how it happened. I don't think he does either.

"We don't know the severity of it. It hurts. We've gone through MRIs, CT scans, ultrasounds."

Teaford's injury forced the Royals to recall right-hander Nate Adcock, who made his first start of the season Sunday against the Diamondbacks. Adcock pitched well, permitting just five hits and one run in five innings.

The Royals, however, are sans a long reliever and may have to make some more roster moves to get somebody in to fill that role.
