Brett Pill is a Giant once again. That news may sound good to Pill fans everywhere, but it’s tough to hear for Giants first baseman Brandon Belt. Pill has been one of the most productive prospects in the minors with his .341 batting average and team-leading nine home runs and 47 RBIs. He has only played in 32 games, but he has been oven an opportunity to spark up the debate: between Belt and Pill, who is better? Ah, yes. That has been tossed around in my head after numerous comparisons of their Baseball Reference pages. Pill and Belt are good examples of polar opposites. Belt spent one year in professional baseball (rookie ball through Fresno) at first base and has spent 244 games with the Giants over three seasons. Pill on the other hand has spent the last eight seasons in the minors and has only seen 63 games in the bigs. We have seen Belt get hot (like right now after the back-to-back games with a homer), we have seen him get cold and we have also seen Pill step in and steal significant playing time. Credit: Bay Area Sports Guy I know Belt has had a slow start to the season after a very hot spring training, but I still have him on my fantasy baseball team for gods sake. I still believe he can become a good first baseman. But after a .244 batting average and 31 strikeouts, fans seem to worried and want a young slugger like Pill. Why would the Giants do that? Belt has hit five homers (third most on the team), driven in 20 RBIs (fourth on the team) and has been on fire in May. Pill, I’ll admit, needs a chance to play as well. He has proven, for three straight seasons, he is too good for the minors. Pill’s last four seasons at triple-A have been a breeze for the 28-year-old. A 2.98 batting average, 61 home runs and 238 RBIs over a span of only 365 is pretty impressive. In the majors, Pill has played in 63 games total from 2011 and 2012. He has a batting average of .239 with only six home runs and 20 RBIs. His OPS+ is only 98 – a barely replacement player. In 63 games by Belt his rookie season in 2011 with the Giants, he hit .225 with nine home runs, 18 RBIs and an OPS+ of 103. Virtually the same player. The reason why Belt should get more playing time is simple: he has a hot bat and is flexing his power with three home runs and nine RBIs in the last 12 games. Oh, and he is hitting .265 in May – 30 points higher than his average in April. It’ll be interesting to see when Pill will get any playing time – perhaps today in Toronto as DH.
