Much has been made about the demise of the Boston Red Sox this year. It probably started when ownership  fired Terry Francona. But that's another story for another day. In comes Bobby Valentine to restore order and discipline to the clubhouse. And out go any playoff aspirations in late August when they send Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, and pitcher Josh Beckett to the Dodgers for spare parts.

So how bad was the Red Sox collapse in the 2nd half?

At the All-Star break:
43-43 record. 22-24 at home, 21-19 away.
Not what they had in mind..268 team average. 5th in MLB.
409 RBI. 3rd.
99 home runs. 8th.
432 runs. 2nd.
803 hits. 3rd.

Post All-Star break:
26-50 record: 13-22 at home, 14-27 away.
.252 team average. 18th in MLB.
286 RBI. 23rd.
66 home runs. 19th.
302 runs. 23rd.
656 hits. 18th.

The Red Sox fell all the way to the bottom of the AL East. The .426 winning percentage is the worst since 1965, if you need a historical perspective. And that leads to what will probably dominate Boston sports headlines for the foreseeable future: When will Bobby Valentine get fired? Not if, but when. You don't oversee the worst season in almost 50 years and live to tell about it.
