Game used anything is big amongst baseball memorabilia collectors, so it’s no real surprise that a foul ball off the bat of Cincy’s Zack Cozart, taken from the Reds-Cubs game on April 24, would sell at auction for $130.01. However, this foul ball is exceptionally special for no other reason than it is covered in the blood of Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija, hence the higher than expected selling price. The verified authentic ball was stained with Samardzija’s plasma after the lanky starter took a Shin-Soo Choo grounder off his pitching hand in the bottom of the 1st. Despite sustaining a cut on his pitching hand Samardzija stayed in the game, going six strong innings and striking out eight, but ended up being tagged with the loss in the Reds 1-0 victory. Here’s the play which caused the cut that led to the bloody ball, and ultimately to one of the more disgusting baseball related auctions ever… All the proceeds went to The Reds Community Fund, the team’s charity that is “dedicated to improving the lives of youth through its baseball-themed outreach efforts.” So there’s that.
