Game used anything is big amongst baseball memorabilia collectors, so it’s no real surprise that a foul ball off the bat of Cincy’s Zack Cozart, taken from the Reds-Cubs game on April 24, would sell at auction for $130.01. However, this foul ball is exceptionally special for no other reason than it is covered in the blood of Cubs pitcher Jeff Samardzija, hence the higher than expected selling price. The verified authentic ball was stained with Samardzija’s plasma after the lanky starter took a Shin-Soo Choo grounder off his pitching hand in the bottom of the 1st. Despite sustaining a cut on his pitching hand Samardzija stayed in the game, going six strong innings and striking out eight, but ended up being tagged with the loss in the Reds 1-0 victory. Here’s the play which caused the cut that led to the bloody ball, and ultimately to one of the more disgusting baseball related auctions ever… All the proceeds went to The Reds Community Fund, the team’s charity that is “dedicated to i...

Cubs Option Ian Stewart to AAA

The Cubs have reinstated 3B Ian Stewart from the 15-day DL and optioned him to AAA Iowa. Stewart suffered a strained quad in an intrasquad game in February, and missed the entire 2013 MLB Cactus League Spring Training schedule. He was placed on the Cubs MLB 15-day Disabled List on March 31st (retro to 3/22), and was left behind at Extended Spring Training when the Cubs left Arizona...

MLB player's hilariously bad acting job

This may not be an actual flop, but we are definitely going to classify it as such.  Cubs outfielder Julio Borbon, who you probably have never heard of until now, seems to be one of the first MLB players to bring flopping to the mainstream baseball audience.  Check out the slightly delayed and fake reaction to a ball that bounced in the dirt, and never came close to him.   Soccer...

JOT: Cubs Minor League Recap 5-1-13

Round Rock Express 1 @ Iowa Cubs 0 Chris Rusin had a very good start. He went 7 innings, allowed 6 hits and a run. He walked none and struckout 5. Hisanori Takahashi struck a batter out and allowed a hit in the 8th. Zach Putnam struckout 2 and allowed a hit in the 9th. Logan Watkins was 3-3 with another walk. He’s struckout a little too much this year and it should come down....

Cubs’ Julio Borbon Fakes Being Hit by Pitch in Hilariously Bad Fashion (Animation)

When playing for a team as hopeless as the Cubs, sometimes embellishing a bit to your advantage isn’t the worst idea. That’s what Chicago center fielder Julio Borbon was thinking Thursday afternoon, at least, but his acting skills could use some serious work. When a pitch from San Diego’s Luke Gregerson landed in the dirt near his feet, Borbon hopped up and down as if the ball...

MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports that Stewart completed his 20-day rehab assignment on May 3, and the Cubs officially assigned him to their Triple-A affiliate Iowa Cubs. 2013 Fantasy Baseball Rookie Report, Week 5: Sell High on Cingrani

Since coming up to replace Cincinnati ace Johnny Cueto a couple weeks ago Tony Cingrani has done a remarkable Cueto impersonation. The rookie lefthander has improved in each of his three outings this season, culminating with a stellar six-inning performance Sunday in Washington. He struck out 11 while walking only one and giving up two hits. He even struck out four batters in one...

Cubs’ Darwin Barney Fall Down And Go Boom

Darwin Barney of the Cubs got up and personal with a bench on Friday as he chased after a foul ball. The result was a pretty solid collision with a bench but the young man rubbed some dirt on it and he was fine. Article found on: Next Impulse Sports

In brief: videos for the off day

Last game The Reds couldn’t get a win for get-away day yesterday in St. Louis. The 2-4 loss pushes them back in to fourth place in the division, though they’re still closer to first (2.0 games back from the Cardinals) than they are to last (3.0 games ahead of the Cubs). Homer Bailey was really great through 5.0 innings, allowing just one run (earned; a solo shot by Carlos Beltran...

The One Where the Rooftops Make Like the French and Surrender

Reset: Cubs trying to make nice with the neighborhood and city regarding concessions on landmark status, renovations, potential obstructing views due to outfield signage, night games, concerts, blah de blah.  However, the rooftops are being a bit troublesome and may even threaten to sue because heavens forbid that their voyeuristic businesses be blocked (even partially). Today,...

Reds 6, Cubs 4

Todd Frazier and Devin Mesoraco each had a sacrifice fly in Cincinnati's four-run eighth inning, and the Reds rallied for a 6-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday. Cincinnati had just one hit in the decisive rally, but took advantage of another woeful outing by reliever Carlos Marmol to secure its first winning road series of the season. The Reds held on for a 6-5 victory...

A Banner Year For International Free Agents

If we are judging by their names, that is. And I definitely am. We're still a couple of months away from the beginning of the signing period, but this fanpost over at the Minor League Ball/ MLB Bonus Baby juggneraut is well worth your attention, at the very least to bookmark now so you can convincingly scoff at Cub signings when they happen. (Smaykin Gonzalez? Pfft, no...
