Report: Felix Doubront Will Be Skipped Next Time Through Rotation as Youngster's Workload Mounts

Felix Doubront is going to be shut down, but not entirely. Bobby Valentine told reporters in Cleveland on Friday that the 24-year-old starter will be skipped over in the rotation for his next scheduled start, in favor of Aaron Cook. Doubront, who had been in line to start again against Baltimore, is expected to be available out of the bullpen if the Sox need him. Doubront has pitched...

Red Sox Do Their Best 'Tantalus' Impression Despite More Drama From Will Middlebrooks (Video)

What did the Red Sox do to anger the gods? Baseball gods, Greek gods, whichever ones you pick, the Red Sox appeared to be cursed by 'em on Wednesday. Time and time again, the team battled back to tie things up, but then couldn't get over the hump. Like the ancient Greek myth of Tantalus, the Sox were left wanting in the end. NESN Nation's Dan Duquette isn't giving...

Craig Breslow Gives Bobby Valentine, Red Sox Many Options in Relief

BOSTON -- Nearly a week since the trade deadline, Bobby Valentine is still exploring the ways he can use new left-handed reliever Craig Breslow. The Red Sox skipper wants to figure out the reliever's skill set, from whether he can appear in back-to-back games to daily pitch limits. As a lefty specialist, Breslow has emerged as one of Valentine's prized commodities. "...

Larry Lucchino Says Bobby Valentine Has 'Done a Good Job,' Attributes Red Sox' Struggles to 'Combination of Factors'

So much has gone wrong for the Red Sox this season that it's hard to pick out just one reason for the team's struggles. You could call out the club's inconsistent starting pitching, injuries, untimely hitting, so on and so forth. Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino isn't ready to place blame on any one area, though. "There is no single source, there'...

'ClayTime' Comes at Perfect Moment With Red Sox in Need of Dominant Pitching Performance (Video)

Clay Buchholz is an ace. Right now, the Boston starter is pitching at about as high of a level as a pitcher can be, and the Red Sox have needed exactly that. Friday night, the offense was able to scratch together enough runs for another Buchholz gem to hold up, and the Sox held on for the 3-2 win over the Cleveland Indians. It's an important win -- and the kind of game that the...

Recap: Indians hand Sox another demoralizing loss.

Yep. The losses continue to suck even more as time passes. Felix Doubront was up & down all night. He gave up a leadoff home run to Jason Donald, who is now hitting .192 on the year, and managed to get out of a mess in the first. He then retired nine out of the next ten batters he faced. Then he can't manage to get anyone else out as the Indians manage to get three more...

Josh Beckett Still Searching for Answers as Red Sox Will Likely Live or Die With Former Ace

Editor's note: NESN.com is going to tell the story of the 2012 Red Sox in Bobby Valentine’s words. Each game day, we will select the best Valentine quote that sums up the day for the Red Sox. After the game, standing at his locker and answering to the media, Josh Beckett looked despondent and his eyes appeared to be red as he spoke in an understated, monotone voice about his...

Red Sox Face Important Road Trip With Stops in Cleveland, Baltimore and New York (Video)

The Red Sox enter Wednesday afternoon's game against the Texas Rangers with a 54-55 record, placing them fourth in the American League East. For Red Sox fans, Boston's spot in the standings is an unusal one, especially since there is just about a month and a half remaining in the regular season. Surprisingly, the Red Sox have played well on the road (26-23) but they soon...

Red Sox reacquire OF Podsednik

The Boston Red Sox have signed veteran outfielder Scott Podsednik just over a week after trading him to Arizona. Podsednik batted .387 with one home run and seven RBI in 19 games for the Red Sox before being dealt to the Diamondbacks on July 31. He was released by Arizona after declining an assignment to Triple-A Reno. Podsednik, who was batting ninth and playing left field Friday...

Unsung Heroes Waiting to Emerge as Red Sox Try to Bounce Back Against Indians (Video)

Scott Podsednik makes his return to the Red Sox lineup on Friday night against Cleveland, and while that might not sound like a lot, it could make all the difference for this one. After all, with the Sox in need of a win in any way possible, every little bit will help, regardless of where it comes from. The same, however, could be said for the Indians, who are playing with a little...

Pedro Ciriaco Starting at Second Base, Dustin Pedroia Filling in at DH Against Ubaldo Jimenez, Indians

The Red Sox head into Cleveland with a chip on their shoulders after losing two straight to the Rangers, finishing off their 10-game home stand with a 55-57 record. Now they turn their attention to the road and hope for better results against the Indians. Pedro Ciriaco is back in the lineup, taking over at second base for hot-hitting Dustin Pedroia. Not to worry, though, Pedey'...

Buchholz dominant in Red Sox win over Indians

CLEVELAND -- No one was more impressed than Cleveland Indians manager Manny Acta. He made that clear after Boston's Clay Buchholz dominated Cleveland's lineup with a two-hit complete game in the Red Sox's 3-2 victory Friday night. "That's the best game I've seen pitched against us all year and it wasn't even a shutout," Acta said. Buchholz...
