The Chicago Cubs are running out of desirable choices as they seek to move right-hander Ryan Dempster. The team had a trade in place to send Dempster to the Atlanta Braves, but the pitcher does not want to go to Atlanta, according to major-league sources – and, as a player with 10 years of service, the last five with the same team, he has the right to reject any deal. Dempster’s preference is the Los Angeles Dodgers, sources say, but the Cubs and Dodgers have been unable to settle a trade. The Cubs’ only other option is to keep Dempster for the rest of the season and then make him a one-year offer for around $12 million to qualify for draft-pick compensation if he leaves as a free agent. But even that possibility comes with a trap door. Dempster, 35, could accept the Cubs’ offer, sticking the team with a $12 million veteran at a time when it is trying to assemble as many young pieces as possible. For that reason, one rival executive says there is “no way” that the Cubs w...

Why the Cubs will trade Ryan Dempster for whatever they can get

I'm sure everyone is as tired of the Ryan Dempster Saga as I am, but all along I had been assuming offering him arbitration at the end of the season was a no-brainer for the Cubs. If they can't get at least something decent in return, they could offer arbitration and would receive a supplemental pick in next year's draft if he declined. I had also assumed Dempster would...

BREAKING: MLB vacates all of Ryan Dempster’s Cubs wins

In a very surprising twist, Commissioner Bud Selig has announced that all of Ryan Dempster's wins, as well as all no-decisions, as a Cub have been vacated.  We have to make a strong statement and by vacating all of his non-loss appearances we believe we have done just that. It's well past the time that a grown man in a baseball uniform be given the option to think for himself...

Source: Dempster does not want trade to Braves -- at least now

Chicago Cubs right-hander Ryan Dempster does not want to be traded to the Atlanta Braves, according to major-league sources. At least not right now. Dempster, as a player with 10 years of major-league service, the last five with the same team, has the right to block a trade to the Braves. The pitcher instead wants to be sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers, who were unable to reach...

Report: Cubs approach Dodgers again about possible Dempster trade

With the Cubs' trade of Ryan Dempster to Atlanta on hold, Cubs officials have approached the Dodgers again regarding a possible trade for Dempster, CBSSports.com reported. The Cubs and Braves had agreed on a trade to send Dempster to Atlanta for pitching prospect Randall Delgado. But because Dempster has been in the league for 10 years, including five with the same team, he...

Josh Vitters entered the 2007 Draft as one of the best bats in the class. Matt Wieters was considered the best college bat in the country and scouts debated whether Mike Moustakas or Josh Vitters was the best high school bat. Some scouts even said Vitters had the best bat in the draft. David Price would be selected 1st and Mike Moustakas next. Then the Cubs picked and took Josh...

Braves on to Plan B after Dempster trade falters

The Atlanta Braves missed out on Ryan Dempster and may look to Zack Greinke to fill the void.

The Ryan Dempster Saga, Part 2

The Cubs' trade deadline could be a disaster

The Chicago Cubs are 40-57, 17.5 games out of first place, and are paying over $25 million to players not even on their roster anymore. With a team that appears to be years away from contending, the Cubs have some players that have gathered interest among many teams. Yet, recent developments are indicating that their deadline might not result in *any* of their trade chips getting...

Report: Ryan Dempster Doesn't Want to Play for Braves, Instead Prefers to Join Dodgers

It seemed on Monday like Ryan Dempster would soon become a member of the Braves. Now, 24 hours later, a deal between Chicago and Atlanta is looking increasingly unlikely. Dempster does not want to play for the Braves, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal. Since Dempster has 10-5 rights (10 years of major league service and the last five with the same team), the right-hander...

Braves must look inward for reason Despster deal failed

General manager Frank Wren is annoyed that the news of a deal for Cubs right-hander Ryan Dempster got out on Monday, essentially scuttling it. Wren is blaming the internet and social media, when he should be taking aim at the front office executive who confirmed the deal to USA Today writer Bob Nightengale, who would not have been able to publish the news without official confirmation...

Colletti Switching Focus To Shields, Willingham, Morneau

The Angels of Anaheim have acquired Zack Greinke from the Milwaukee Brewers. This obviously takes him off the table for the Dodgers, not that the Dodgers were all that interested in him anyway.  Matt Garza is expected to remain with the Cubs after news of a MRI revealing  a slight fluid buildup in Garza’s triceps area. He is expected to miss his next start for sure and could...

Potential deadline trades

Nearly every player on the Cubs is a potential trade candidate so talking about each one would be exhaustive and pointless. Luis Valbuena is a trade candidate though why any team would trade for him, I don't know. It's not like there was a line of teams wanting to sign him after he was DFA'd and he's not been very good so it's safe say that he's a candidate...
