Before this season began, I pegged the Giants to win anywhere from 88 to 90 wins in 2012.

Despite Buster Posey back and the starting five looking dominant as ever, I thought they would still struggle to compete with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the top spot in the NL West.

Boy, things are looking a little different.

The Giants have three games left this season – all agaisnt the Dodgers in Los Angeles. As of now, they also hold a nine game lead over the second place dodgers and have 93 wins. They have already surpassed my expectations and have one of he best records in baseball (the National and Reds take the cake, unfortunately).

I just wanted to take a moment and let everyone know the Giants could end this season with 96 wins, a feat this organization has not done since 2003 when they won an even 100 games.

Sure, 100 games are more impressive than 96, but the team is different in 2012.

Back in 2003, the Giants had guys like Barry Bonds, Marquis Grissom, Jose Cruz and Edgardo Alfonzo racking up 180 home runs as a team. In 2012, the team has no real home run threat besides Buster Posey, Hunter Pence and Pablo Sandoval (who, lets face it, are not real power hitters).

In 2012, the Giants have hit 101 home runs in 159 games – dead last in the MLB, 11 behind the second-worst home-run-hitting team, the LA Dodgers. So yeah, looking at the team on paper, one does not easily think of a potential 96-win team.

And that, my friends, is a pretty special thing.

In 2010 when the Giants went on to win the World Series, they won a total of 92 games in the regular season – even they hit 162 homers that year.

The Giants are a sneaky team with loads of potential going into the post season and sometimes it’s an advantage for underdogs to be labelled as such.

Go Giants. Beat LA.
