Sean Riley Contributing Writer Jose Iglesias has earned what seems to be a very steady role on the Red Sox 25 man roster. With the return of Will Middlebrooks from injury many expected Iglesias to stay in the bigs with his hot bat and Pedro Ciriaco become the odd man out. This will not be the typical utility infielder most are used to seeing on a big league team. Manager John Farrell has made their plan for Iglesias pretty clear as Boston will look to give him steady playing time. "We're going to do everything we can to get Jose three days a week on the left side of the infield," said John Farrell. "Everyone is aware of that plan going forward. The fact is, we've got a pretty deep 25-man roster and we can afford to keep some guys' legs fresh as we get into hotter months and deeper into the season." Stephen Drew has played a solid shortstop this season but his inconsistent offense could also lead to increased playing time for the young Iglesias. Fill...

The Case To Start Jose Iglesias Every Day

Al Messerschmidt/Getty ImagesBoth Will Middlebrooks and Stephen Drew have over 100 more at-bats than Jose Iglesias. Despite that edge in playing time, Drew has exactly six more hits (41) and Middlebrooks one more (36) than Iglesias (35). If you want to add some fancy-schmanzy sabermetrics into the equation, Iglesias has a WAR of 1.7—exactly the same as Drew and far superior to...

Jose Iglesias Is Back In Tonight's Lineup

Well, Jose Iglesias did not "ride the pine" very long. Manager John Farrell has re-inserted the defensive (and now offensive) whiz in the Red Sox lineup. Iglesias will hit ninth and play third base—one day after the return of Will Middlebrooks. Mike Napoli returns to first base after taking Monday off, and David Ross will spell the red-hot Jarrod Saltalamacchia behind...

Iglesias Out; Middlebrooks In Today's Sox Lineup

It looks like the three-person infield merry-go-round is intact for the Red Sox. After starting at third yesterday (and logging two hits), Jose Iglesias is benched today in favor of Will Middlebrooks. The Red Sox have intimated that Iglesias will get at least two starts a week in this three-way 'platoon'. Daniel Nava starts in right.

Jose Iglesias, Will Middlebrooks ‘Could End Up Sharing Third Base’ As Iglesias Continues Hot Streak (Video)

It seems Jose Iglesias will be getting his shot as a utility infielder. Iglesias stepped up into the role in the absence of injured Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks, and made a sound case for why he should get to stick with the big league club. Iglesias’ success seems to be a blessing and a curse for manager John Farrell, who benefits from Iglesias’ strong play but also...

Middlebrooks returns to lineup

@nickcafardo - Boston GlobeThere it is, folks. Middlebrooks in, Iglesias out. This doesn't necessarily mean Jose will be sent back down to Pawtucket, he will likely stick around to platoon. Ciriaco will likely be the odd man out. In his 5 game with Pawtucket, Will Middlebrooks went 5-for-17, with 2 homers, and 6 RBI. The Sox made it very clear that Middlebrooks would be inserted...

Jose Iglesias Deserves Playing Time, But Stephen Drew, Will Middlebrooks Are Better Options for Red Sox Right Now

Every day, it’s looking more and more like the time of Jose Iglesias is an inevitability. Like Jackie Bradley Jr. in spring training, the prognostications for the young shortstop are becoming not “if” Iglesias will make an impact in the big leagues, but “when.” Also like Bradley in the spring, Iglesias has thoroughly forced the issue, making a valid case that he should...

Jose Iglesias Starts at Third, Will Middlebrooks Sits for Second of Three Games in Tampa

The Jose Iglesias-Will Middlebrooks-Stephen Drew conundrum will be a prominent storyline following the Red Sox over the next few weeks. Middlebrooks, in his first game back from a rehab stint in Pawtucket, got the start at third base Monday night in Tampa Bay, and he and Drew both struggled at the plate in Boston’s 14-inning win. The two infielders combined to go 2-for-13 with...

Red Sox-Rays Live: Will Middlebrooks Back in Lineup Against Tampa Bay, Pedro Ciriaco Designated for Assignment

2:45 p.m.: Will Middlebrooks is back, and the odd man out, as has been speculated, is Pedro Ciriaco. Ciriaco had his shining moments last season on a team that had little else to offer, but he hasn’t been anything but an average fill-in on the big league roster this year. With Jose Iglesias playing some truly inspired baseball in Middlebrooks’ absence, it only made sense to keep...

Will Middlebrooks, Shane Victorino Return to Red Sox Lineup As Mike Napoli Sits

The Red Sox’ lineup is nearly back to full strength. Shane Victorino is back after a day off on Sunday and Will Middlebrooks has returned after a stint on the 15-day disabled list.
