We are never going to be rid of Vernon Wells, are we? Every time it seems like the Angels are on the verge of erasing Tony Reagins' most epic of mistakes, something happens to keep him in the fold.  Last season, it was the uncertainty surrounding Kendrys Morales' recovery and Mark Trumbo's ability to get on base more than once every week.  Factor in a strong, in relative terms, stretch for Vernon before he hurt himself and the Halos had convinced themselves that he deserved a second chance in a part-time role. Somehow, the mere temptation of having Wells on the roster was too much for Scioscia even though he had roughly seventeen OF/DH types on the roster at the time.  Before you knew it, Sosh had burned 262 plate appearances on Vernon.  He did nothing to earn the playing time.  He did nothing to earn a third chance. One off-season later, the Angels find themselves in a similar position. They've got too many outfielders, even after the Morales trade, and ...

Insurance, Thy Name is Bourjos (or Why Morales Was the One to Go)

By David Saltzer, AngelsWin.com Senior Writer My uncle John just recently passed, and he has been on my mind a lot. Our families would spend Christmas together, and the holidays just aren’t the same without him. My uncle John was an insurance agent. He always told me never buy anything expensive if I couldn’t afford the maintenance and the insurance on it. He’d tell me that...

Adjusting to Josh Hamilton

The easy thing is talking about what Josh Hamilton has done. For his career, he’s hit .304, with 161 dingers. Last year, his WAR was 4.4, and before that it was 4.1, and before that he won the American League MVP. Hamilton just signed a substantial contract with the Angels, and the season most relevant to the Angels during negotiations would’ve been Hamilton’s 2012. Hamilton...

MLB Rumors: Will Los Angeles Angels Trade Mark Trumbo For Ricky Nolasco?

The Los Angeles Angels currently have one two many outfielders after signing Josh Hamilton to a massive contract, and would love to move one of them for another starting pitcher who can immediately fit into the starting rotation. James Shields had been mentioned as a possibility before the Tampa Bay Rays fleeced the Kansas City Royals for top hitting prospect Wil Meyers, but that...

Angels Clear Logjam, Land Jason Vargas

The acquisition of Josh Hamilton gave the Angels what they wanted, but it also left the Angels with a little problem: between Peter Bourjos, Mark Trumbo, and Kendrys Morales, they had too many good players for too few spots. This was, as they say, a nice problem to have, and the Angels also felt they had a need for another innings-eating starting pitcher. So in a move surprising...

How can the Angels protect the future of the ballclub?

With the recent monster signing of former Texas Ranger Josh Hamilton to a 5-year, $125 million  contract it's become obvious the Angels are in "win now" mode harder than they've ever been before. Harder than they were last year when they spent $300 million on Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson. The Hamilton signing is nothing but amazing for the Angels, in the short...

Jedi Mind-tricks and Angels’ Moneyball

By Gregory Bird - AngelsWin.com ContributorWe’re all fairly aware of what I’m about to say and I don’t mean this to be earth shattering but I thought it deserved to be acknowledged, for the sake of all of our collective sanity. Dipoto is not stupid, he has a plan. I am beginning to suspect I understand it too and here’s what I see. It is well known that the Moneyball strategy...

Phillies Interested in Angels' Vernon Wells

Oh how the Los Angeles Angels would love to be out from under the mistake they made with Vernon Wells.  The Angels acquired Wells in a trade in January of 2011.  Now, they wish they hadn't.  He is making far too much money for his level of productivity and he has been injured to boot.  However, the Angels may be able to part way with the veteran outfielder if the Philadelphia...

Josh Hamilton Blames Second-Half Struggles Exclusively on Quitting Chewing Tobacco

During the 2012 season, Josh Hamilton‘s struggles in the second half were well documented. On Running, With Mike Trout and Jesus Montero

Phillies Outfield Pursuit is Getting Silly as Scott Hairston and Vernon Wells Emerge as Main Options

The Phillies appear to have given up on the idea of getting an acutal starting outfielder with power and have gone to some last restorts. The latest from CSNPhilly's Jim Salisbury seems to indicate that the Phillies do not wish to even pay the price of a Cody Ross and...
